Ajohnson85's '87 build

Finally worked on this thing yesterday. I'm using the FROR Tacoma brake kit with 2005 Tundra brakes. I painted the brackets and calipers, and pressed new studs and bearing races into the hubs. Just need to clean off the old gaskets and install the ARP hub studs.

Oh yea, I picked this up a few weeks ago.

Only had to trade labor for it, helped my friend cab swap his '03 Tundra. I got the complete motor, ECU, and both harnesses out of an '02 donor truck. Still researching how I want to make it work.

Of course I can't find the outer flange gaskets I thought I had. I'll have to wait a couple days, thank goodness for Amazon Prime. Here are some pics of 1st gen Tundra brakes vs. 1st gen Tacoma brakes;

are those tundra brakes on the 3.5" mounting width or the newer 4.5 or whatever it is. ive been wanting to commit to the front range brake bracket but i dont know which of the two mounting widths i want to go with.

I got brakes for a 2005 Tundra V8, not sure what mounting width you're referring to.

the width between the mounting ears on the calipers. are they they 3.5" width like the stock 1st-3rd gen calipers or the 4.5 or 5 or what ever it is of the 4th gen+ calipers.

3rd gen and 4th gen/Tundra have the same mounting hole spacing. that is why 3rd gen guys can run 13WL Calipers intended for the Tundra Brake upgrade.

Haha nailed it

So v8 and then r150 trans. What transfer case? One tons?!

I would use my existing dual cases with an adapter, I'll have to convert the front case input to 23 spline. The rear case is already 23 spline. Going to keep the current axles. I have always been pretty good about not hammering down and blowing shit up. I plan to get 39's or maybe go back to 37's in the future.

The 2uz swap is a ways off. It will take me a while to gather parts I think I will need, and I need to build a workshop. I'm tired of lugging my tools in and out of the house whenever I work on it.

Nice! is that the FROR Taco brake kit?

edit- stupid question but what size rims are you running? hoping 15's since I just invested in new rims/tires, I think I am gonna look into the FROR kit since it would be nice to pull an axle with out screwing around with bearings everytime..

FROR kit but I decided to use '05 Tundra brakes. I have 17" wheels. IIRC first gen tacomas can fit 15" but don't take my word for it.

yep, looks like if I went with early taco brakes I could fit 15's.
glad I looked at FROR page, you need to use IFS wheel hubs. I was gonna give those away (just got the SAS done on my 94) so need to hang on to them

That 4Runner is badass. Any advice for applying the stripes from James Dean Creations? I'd like to get some for my '87. They look fantastic.
