Ajohnson85's '87 build

Looking awesome as usual.

I'm digging the RC setup. I don't have an RC crawler, but have one of the lexan 4runner bodies put up still in the box, just in case I ever get one. That one is way cooler.

Thanks dude! The RC should turn out pretty sweet. Here’s some teaser pics

We finally got a break from rain yesterday so I finished pulling the head off. I’m putting in a head from Redline Engine Builders with 1 mm oversized valves, 3 angle valve job, and a 268c Torker camshaft.

I guess I didn't mention how replacing the head came about. I was originally just swapping to a late model intake, supra throttle body, and supra AFM. When I pulled the upper intake, I found the #1 injector leaking. So I ordered some Bosch 4 hole injectors on Ebay, and then decided to give this head and camshaft a try to see if I can get better performance on the highway. I had pretty good acceleration but staying at 75 mph was difficult on any kind of incline. I know I have a 2uz V8 I can swap in, but this is kind of an experiment until I have a decent work area to tackle that.

The east coast is now Seattle, it hasn’t stopped raining for 6 months. Engine progress is slow, and I just keep ordering more and more parts. LCE pro rocker shafts (the 4 hole ones), new OEM rockers and adjusters, all new heater pipes and hoses, new heater valve (mine was missing but cable still intact), all new temperature sensors, new CSF 2314 16” 3 core radiator (to replace the smaller 2 core plastic tank junk) , and silicone radiator hoses. All new manifold hardware and fuel pressure regulator.

I think I’m gonna move the factory temp gauge sensor to an upper hose sensor manifold, and put an Autometer sensor in the factory location, that way I’ll get accurate readings and still have the factory gauge.

Decided to get the 150 amp alternator I should have done years ago, since it’s accessible.

I couldn’t figure out where so much oil has been leaking, after replacing two rubber half moons, I finally discovered that somebody FIPG’d this flattened $1.79 O ring instead of replacing it, SMH

Intake and throttle body mocked up. I’m using cruise control throttle cable brackets, and all-thread to link the ball sockets. I’ll take pics when I finish the throttle linkage.

the 2UZ would be a sweet swap but it is a cool to milk the 22RE for all it's worth as an experiment too
Been watching this on instagram too

The 2uz swap will be a tough one, and I am putting it off for atleast a little while. It can be done, I’m just not motivated for it right now.

I really want to keep the stock temp gauge sender in the original location, and since I removed all the EGR crap a while ago, the BMSV port looked like a great spot for an aftermarket sender, right above the ECU temp sender. After some searching, I found what sounded like the correct thread size for this port, 3/8 BSPT. So I searched and searched for a 3/8 BSPT - 1/8 NPT adapter, and found one here...
9042 - BSPT to Female NPTF | Hydraulics Direct

And viola...

Thanks!

It is almost ready to try firing it. I opened the AFM and adjusted the wheel 5 clicks rich. I just need to add a vacuum fitting to the intake tube to draw air for the IACV.

I gave it a 5 second crank to prime the fuel and oil, and noticed the factory temp gauge still jumps to the middle. I was hoping a new sensor would fix that.

Got it running and it drives much better now. It took a lot of fiddling with the throttle body to get the idle right and set the timing. It was running really rich so I set the AFM back to stock. The OEM single stage thermostat kept spiking at 220* even with the heater valve closed, so I put in the dual stage and it cools much better. It accelerates in 5th gear on the highway now, and got up to 80 mph easily, which I couldn’t do before. Really happy now, but not sure if any one thing helped the most. With refurbished injectors, bigger AFM, bigger throttle body, valve job, and 268c camshaft, I’m pretty happy with it.

Put on a new softopper yesterday! My original one has been a little neglected while installed for 6 years almost year-round.

How’s this thing runnin? More so, any further experience/opinions on that redline big valve head? I’ve been eyeing one and have yet to pull the trigger.

I would almost bet youre not married seeing car parts right next to the bed lol. My wife would have a shit attack! But if you are more power to ya brotha!!

Haha! I am engaged, and I did catch some flack having parts all over the spare bedroom, but she mostly understands my obsession. I had the kitchen counter cleaned off every evening before she got home lol.
