My wife, kids and I met up with my in laws in their supped-up Rubicon and stayed in Brantley Lake State Park just north of Carlsbad. We spent two full days running the roads around the southern and middle parts of the Guadalupe RD. It snowed most of the time, but we never saw any deeper than about 4in. Being from the DFW area, I don't get to drive in snow much. We spent about 3 hours on snowy county roads one evening coming back. It was so much fun, we took a couple detours and added about 60 miles to the route just to make it last. It was a blast, even though the temp stayed in the lower 20's. Good part about that is we only saw 2 or 3 ATV's the whole time. We wanted to run up to Alamo and spend a couple days in the Sacramento and Smokey Bear districts, but we were advised by the locals to stay away because of the weather. All in, we had a great time. We'll add this area to our rotation and go back in a couple of years, hopefully with better weather. We're not big into hiking (2 kids, 1 and 5) but we like to get out and walk around every once in a while. Even that didn't happen this go round. we'd planned on spending a couple more days at the parks, but because they were closed, we were forced to check out the other local attractions. We're not the tourist type, but when forced to, we can have a good time anywhere.
