Hello.

I have a 2002 SR5 and sometimes have to park in a sketchy area. So I've been thinking about security. I'm 44 and my experience with alarms has not always been positive. Endlessly going off. Can't start car when you need to. FIRES. But I need something... Here is my plan and I'm looking for input.

My overall thinking is that anything I install I must be able to override easily in case it fails.

1. Manually activated Ignition kill - In the old days I would just put a relay that would kill the fuel pump or starter and hide the switch in the cabin. Where would you guys do the interrupt?

2. Blinking light - I have these $4 blinking LEDs that go on when you turn your car off... they are FAKE alarms.. to me this is half the battle. I'll probably do that for sure.

3. I would like an alarm that just goes off when a door is opened. AKA sensing a drop in voltage. I can't really find anything that simple anymore. Anyone seen just a two wire voltage sensing alarm with a siren?

What I want to avoid is an alarm with a "Brain". I know I'll be giving up some features but I'm hoping to ADD reliability.

Unless someone out there knows of an alarm that they really like and is practically bullet proof.

I can do any install myself FYI.

After I had my 280z stolen years ago I rigged a homemade alarm. Somehow they had got in the door and started it via the ignition switch without doing any damage to it. A month later the police found it basically unharmed on the side of the street, ign still on, battery dead, flat tire and only a few things taken from inside.

I used a 3 way switch hidden under the dash. I had it wired to the small wire to the starter but when the switch was flipped to kill the starter I wired the other side of the 3way to the horn. If someone did jimmy the ignition switch the voltage would go to the horn instead of the starter.

More than once at 3am still half asleep headed off to work at UPS I would forget to flip the switch, turn the key and the horn would scare the s#@t out of me....no longer half asleep............I'm sure the neighbors weren't to happy either.

Along those lines of thinking... When the door is opened and the dome light comes on tap into that wire and using a 3way send the power to the horn. If they shut the door though the horn would stop.......

Just throwing out ideas.......

RS3000 VIP Alarm

Although you may want to put in a manual switch, the Toyota RS3000 VIP alarm does what you want and has almost zero potential for a false alarm. You get the added benefit of remote entry.

The only sensors are the door switches and a glass break sensor. There is no motion sensor or anything else to go off by accident. If you are really worried about false alarms you could disable the glass break sensor but in my 6 years with the car, I have never once had it go off except when I opened the door with the key while the alarm was on.

It's really almost a keyless entry system with a very basic alarm.

Of course you're going to have to find a salvage yard where you can pull out the original and any extra wiring you might need but if you remove the harness and two units, it should be a plug and play install.
 
I know this thread is old, but...

How much is the RS3000 system?

Which fake alarm light did you buy? Does it really turn on when you shut the car?
 
ive got a clifford alarm just the very basics has a shock sensor if you open the doors it goes off ive got 2 sirens under the hood and one on the inside very loud
