Alarm system locations?

I got a remote (ID HYQ1512Y), and it won't program correctly so started suspecting that I had a factory or dealer alarm system that keeps it from working.

Called the dealer and from the VIN they could not tell so asked if I had seen a control box anywhere in the vehicle.

Anyone know what I should be looking for or where?

first place to look is under the seat or behind the plasic on the rear hatch. I would start with under the seat

right by the steering column and underneath the dash.

That would be for an aftermarket install, factory location is in the rear hatch.

If it is a "VIP" dealer installed Toyota alarm it is under the seat.

If it is aftermarket look around the steering column like James suggested, I put mine behind the gauge cluster. It could also be in either the passenger or driver side kick panel as well as behind the glovebox. You will know if it is an aftermarket install if there is a Valet button somewhere around the drivers area.

Sorry, I haven't had a chance to crawl through my 4TR yet. What is the 'rear hatch' area? On the left side behind the rear wheel?

To access the "rear hatch area" you have to remove the plastic paneling on the rear hatch itself. After removing the paneling the will be a box on the right hand side (if you were to be inside the truck) that says toyota security on it.

Never thought something like that would be inside the rear hatch vs. the main body of the vehicle, that's why I was being dense.

Ya, it is in a rather obscure spot, and when you think about it all it really does is roll down the back window and unlock the doors. The engine immobilizer part is integrated into the fuse block under the dash, so you cant really "find" that one.

Plus having the receiver at the back of the vehicle probably makes for better reception of the remote when you're pulled into a parking space...

And for the life of me can't find one with that ID available anywhere...

So I've looked under the seats, under the dash, and still can't find another security box.

Yet I've got this blinking red light on my center console labeled 'Security' that blinks after the doors have been locked from the outside, and a horn mounted on the inside of my engine bay (pass side) that is not activated with my horn button.

I must have a box somewhere still...

Most 4Runner remotes are FCC ID: HYQ1512Y, which is what I bought and which does not work.

So apparently (confession time), the HYQ1512Y is the correct remote for my 99 T4R Limited, and I just wasn't using the correct instructions or not performing them correctly. The remote FCC ID is apparently different from the one I found on the box in my hatch, but I guess it makes sense because they are different products according to FCC.

Here are the instructions that worked for me:

1. Start with key out of ignition, drivers door is open all others closed and
drivers door is unlocked.

2. Insert key into the ignition (Do NOT Turn) and Pull key out.

3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Using the power lock switch on the drivers door, perform 5 lock/unlock cycles
starting with lock. Use an even pace and try to go about one cycle per second.
(1Cycle = 1 lock and 1 unlock).
B. Close, then open drivers door.

4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Using the power lock switch on the drivers door, perform 5 lock/unlock cycles
starting with lock. Use an even pace and try to go about one cycle per second.
(1Cycle = 1 lock and 1 unlock).
B. Insert the key in the ignition cylinder.
C. Turn the ignition to ON (Do NOT Start) then back to OFF.
D. Remove the key from the ignition.

5. Within 3 seconds the power door locks should cycle automatically indicating successful
entry into programming mode. Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle at this point.

6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Press the lock and unlock buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1 second.
B. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons, press the lock button by
itself and hold for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle once
indicating successful programming. If the door locks do not cycle, or cycle twice.
repeat steps A and B in step 6 as your remote has not been accepted.
C. Repeat steps A and B in step 6 for each new remote.

7. Close drivers door.

Where did you find it? I am looking for a remote too, but I can not find anything that lets me belief my 4runner ever had it.

Inside the rear hatch. Take off the interior plastic cover and it's in the same space where your rear glass retracts into...

I found it, VIN confirms the remote entry ( via dealer print out), I got a remote, dealer confirms right remote. I tried the remote programming and I can not get into the programming mode. I must have tried 10 times by now, I am afraid I am gonna wear out the solenoids for the locks. Any Ideas?

I had the same problem. The timing of the button presses is very important, especially for step 6:

6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Press the lock and unlock buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1 second.

itself and hold for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle once
indicating successful programming.

The biggest issue with the instructions floating around the internet is the timing of the lock/unlock cycle. Following the "1 cycle" per second is recommended. Using the "fairly quickly" method didn't work for me.
