Hahahaha... you might be getting your Fairbanks and Dankorage mixed up around Confusion Corner...
Buy a beater from some poor sucker being sent away from the Elephant Cage. Keep the runner parked.
If you decide to take the Runner, just make sure you've got good synthetic oils, a quality battery and either a pan heater or battery blanket.
Also, if you're heading up for Quest, it starts in Whitehorse this year and ends in Fairbanks. Come on up and grab a beer. Between Kanoe and I I'm sure we can get you taken care of!

If you're planning to head up in the spring, my recommendation would be to wait until after the Victoria Day weekend. That way you can go to Dawson and take the Top of the World Highway!

Pollution? I was up in Dankorage for a year, that place was always crystal clear. I guess it’s all in the perspective though.
Off roading up there is an entirely different beast. It’s wet, loose and muddy and my runner did not perform well in it.
There is supposed to be a place near Eagle River to off-road, I was advised to never go there. To many red necks that wanna light your car on fire if you leave it unattended for a minute. So I’m told.
Expect rust. wash under the trim of your wheel wells and the backside of your rear bumper frequently. You’ll see plenty of runners rusted totally out in those places.
Shy away from any coating materials like rhino lining to prevent rust. It still rusts, you just wont ever see it. Stick to an oil based.
Good news is Alaska doesn’t use salt. They use some other ice melt mixed with a whole lot of gravel.
If you need a good mechanic, check out “Fish Motors” in Anchorage. He’s fair priced and is a wealth of knowledge. He gave me all sorts of tips on the perfect way to winterize my runner. He was a master Toyota mechanic for 10 years and has a built taco.

I suspect they go a little heavier between the Mayo road turn off and Takhini gas. This stretch is always a mess when the rest of the city is nicely frozen. I suspect someone of importance lives out this way, or maybe it's just the dangerous bridge!
only 2 days left of a 12 day trip and it has been great. Saw the aurora twice. Been skiing a lot, going again today. Caribou hunting did not pan out.Love seeing my grandkids, Lots of friendly people ( but IM sure there is also the opposite) yes its cold, only supposed to hit a high of -8 today, but with the right clothes its not a big issue.You have to be a person that enjoys snow and are active or plan to sit inside all day. Food prices are not as high as I thought they would be , gas is high for self serve. Seems the majority of people drive on blizzarks. Met a friend of my sons who has a 99 4runner ( my son has a taco as well as other rigs) and he told me what I need to get it ready for up here. It fits in with what others in this thread have said.
Jobs with my experience will not be an issue . So I won't fully "retire". Housing won't be an issue.
