So Alaskaman, gone are the times racing with this mustangs and escapes in I-80, US-50 or I-5...or parking in the boring Arden Mall.
How I wish I can drive in places like that..
And How I dream I can bring the 4Runner home..."homeward bound, I wish I was"...

That is cool! Thanks for the pix - fantastic views. I don't see how it would ever get old. Alaska is a dream trip for the wife and I. The total opp side of the USA for us as well. I love to read about the trips on advrider.com - a motorcycle adventure site. This is the 1st ADV 4runner story I have seen. I am a geek for that stuff - makes the day at the office go faster - thanks!

Beaver Creek Yukon

Camera is down. Cell is down. Wifi in very remote Yukon. From Haines Alaska to Beaver Creek Yukon. The most amazing topography I have ever seen.

Details

Temperature in F. 32 to 2 degrees.

Road is packed snow and packed ice.

Average speed about 48. top 65.

4 Hi all the way.

Windshield fluid frozen even with alcohol. moonroof frozen shut. frost prevents opening the rear door without effort.

Scorpions are flawless. Will advise on flat spotting tomorrow. Temp will be minus 12 tonight.

4Runner is an amazing vehicle. Riding this two land road with large trucks coming the other way occasionally. Requires constant attention to the exterior and interior environments. One minute the temp is 17 the next minute ice fog descends and drops it to 2. Frost heaves are like a roller coaster. No slipping allowed and none had. Have to go from 3 to 4 to D using gears constantly while monitoring road, oncoming and fogging of mirrors other internals and front glass....... air conditioning helps. This vehicle has all the tools.

150 to 200 miles between gas. hot coffee a welcome relief. The lodgings here are warm, usually used trailers, mos def not the Marriott. People are very friendly, outgoing and love our country.

Onto Tok Alaska tomorrow. Will try and locate camera charger but hey, YOU really should take this trip. It is absolutely amazing!!!!!:biggrin2:

Tok Alaska 4 degrees F. I did not discern any flat spotting this AM after 16 hours at 5 to 0 overnight. Above Anchorage about 300 miles. Pics are Haines Eagle Gathering and (finally) the Beast.

We had to rent a Taurus as my 4Runner is full. Met two women who are photographers and another traveling from New Zealand. Very nice.:dancin:

Safe and Sound.

My camera is still down. of all the sights the Matanuska Glacier is MAGNIFICENT. perhaps it's best as no picture could ever capture that scene.

Tok to Anchorage was ice road about 1/2 of the way. Shall we say interesting?

Thought about the trip:

Don't try to open the sunroof in freezing temperatures.:bash:

Make reservations ahead.

Carry a Sattelite phone. This trip made it clear to me how fast a hypothermic emergency can happen. Within 15 minutes of exposure a person would be in serious trouble at these temps. I carried an LL Bean down parka, 2 sleeping bags and all the other items we talked about in the Winter survival pack thread. in the 840 miles I saw one State Trooper. You can go 100 miles without seeing another vehicle either direction.

I recommend a spring or summer trip with kids IMO.

Border Agents want to know about weapons. They have cameras that take your license plate, download it into a computer and then ask you where and what for based upon that information. They are serious about guns. I recommend shipping them. Carry a passport. Any other document provokes more questions.

It was an incredible journey. I always look forward to posting. If you get up this way always room for new friends.

I'm assuming from Tok you took the Glen down to ANC? I drove that road in summer and it was hairy. Can't imagine doing it in winter with snow. It was nice to get into palmer after that last bit of road. Seems to wear your nerves out.
But the Mat glacier is absolutely GORGEOUS! It seems like it is the 'bluest' of all the ones I've seen.
BTW what were you in the lower 48 for?

Yes it does, that was an aftermarket option donated to me crossing Canada by local folk dancing in the streets.
