Alignment turns into wheel bearing replacement

so After putting on my lift and new tires I decided to take the 4runner for an alignment. I did the install myself and everything went smooth. While on jack stands there is no play in the wheels. There is no noise from my front end. The vehicle drives straight, but with new tires and lift I knew i needed an alignment.

I took the 4runner to Pepboys for the alignment (mistake.) After waiting about an hour the lady behind the desk said that I needed a new wheel bearing and hub assembly. When asked why she had to ask the tech who did not give me an answer just the typical "it needs to be replaced." I told them to bring my car out and I did not want their service after she quoted me over $700 without the alignment for the job. She proceeded to tell me that i needed to pay $22 for suspension inspection. I did not make too much of a fuss with them and just paid for the service. Needless to say I will not be going back to that place.

Good call. Without any symptoms of a bad bearing or a solid explanation of why one was needed I'd tell them to shove it.

Besides, if you can install your own lift, you can definitely install a new front bearing

Absolutely! I was a little pissed off because there was a old lady getting an oil change and the service tech told her she needed a new oil plug bolt because it was long and that she needed a new shorter one. Then he proceeded to say that she may need a new oil pan because the bolt might of stripped the groves. All of that made no sense to me at all but i shook my head as the lady agreed to have all of that replaced when she went in for a simple oil change.

As far as the wheel bearing once i get settled into my new house i will revalute and see if it really needs to be replaced and if I do then i will do it myself.

If you do decide that you need new bearings, and I doubt you do, look up forum member nj636. He sells assembled hub units that bolt right on. A lot of us are running them.
