It just takes ~10 years to deplete in Zone C.
No, it is exactly about shrapnel. The recall is for "degradation" of the repellant causing it to become unstable and potentially rupture the inflator. "Depletion" would mean the propellant escapes (not possible) or becomes inert. But with the wink, I can't tell if you were making an obscure reference or joke. If so, I missed it.:shrug:

As for Takata going out of business, this Fortune article shows what they're up against.
Toyota, including its Lexus and Scion brands, began replacing passenger-side inflators starting last October. The threat is so great that the company even advised its dealers to disable the passenger-side airbags if the replacement was not available, and attach a sticker to the dashboard that says “Do Not Sit Here.”

I used to be a quality engineer at an airbag inflator company (not Takata) and still have some bad habits.
This whole story has been very interesting to me because I know all of the efforts we made to keep propellant protected from humidity, assure welds will hold, etc. Our propellant wasn't the same as Takata's. If it was exposed to moisture the inflator became a dud... which is better than a bomb... but still not what you want. They are scary devices when something goes wrong.

Yea, the entire thing is scary... And it is just more evidence of why modern vehicles are such poor candidates for hard core off-road adventure rigs.... All the electronics are just way too sensitive to harsh conditions over the long haul.... And when something does go wrong out in the middle of nowhere...you are totally SOL. At least with mechanical stuff, you can often come up with some type of trail repair or patch.
As far as the actual risk goes.. I have no facts at all, but I'm guessing none of the 5th gen 4runner bags have actually gone off and hurt people with shrapnel, yet! They are too new... They just know the chemistry is there... and it is just a matter of time.
I'm just hoping they make it a priority and get replacement parts very soon.

It seems the safer we try to make everything the less people seem to use common sense. If we all paid more attention when we drove, we wouldn't even have airbags, tech dulls the senses for sure.
I totally agree, I do enjoy my 5th gen for sure, I do often miss my old beat up Toyo pickup. I knew that thing inside out, engine apart a few times, tore it down to the bone once. 22re, manual trans, Aisin hubs, and manual everything else, he'll it didn't even have a/c. I would have loved to buggy that thing out. Wife hated it!

Definitely concerning and I hope they find a fix soon. But I had to think of it like the following to calm my nerves after I heard about the problem.
In a humid environment like Florida, it would take approximately 6 years for degradation (or so they claim) on my 2016.
Then I would have to get in an accident bad enough for the passenger airbag to inflate (since this issue is not causing airbags to inflate spontaneously).
If that happens, there is a 2% chance of the inflator rupturing, based on the testing of retrieved units http://www.autonews.com/article/20150520/OEM11/150529981/takata-says-265-airbag-inflators-ruptured-during-testing
I'm not saying that this makes it better, or will change the lives of those who were injured or worse, but it helped me to understand the recall and overall risk.

Wouldn't be the first time I had sharpnel fly by my face. Bring it on airbag lol! Joking aside really hope they get replacement parts ASAP and don't go by that chart. I was all over the country last year and exposed the runner to multiple climates. Majority being South Carolina and that was miserable in the summer. There is a problem and they need to make it right and safe. Is this the same issue Honda is having? I know my wife's co worker had to take her CRV in for an airbag recall.

^This, I didn't read the link and I am all for the recall to get the appropriate fix but when you look at all the things that would have to happen to kill you I put it low on the list of things to die from. People are so worried about things like this (not sayings its a non issue but its seems things like this "sell" in the media ) but then eat trash, don't exercise, drive while sleepy, don't adjust driving habits to weather, have no how to do basic first aid, are totally helpless without a smart phone etc....

I'm reminded of that movie idiocracy, putting toilet water on the seeds to make them grow! Many people just get dumber common sense wise the more high tech they become. I love the tech of course, but a few days unhooked is a very good feeling here and there.
My neighbor has a CRV and it's fairly old, Honda put him in a rental even though we are in Colorado. My guess was the age of his crv was the concern, that was weeks ago. They also have kids in the passenger seat often, the other vehicle is a Toyota minivan, brand new.

Yes, Honda seems to have gotten the worst of it and I believe it is in Hondas where the injuries/fatalities have occurred so far.
