I don't use my 4runner a lot and long story short, the battery died. I tried to jump it and after numerous failed attempts, i chose to get a new battery. Good news, is it starts right up with the new battery.

Bad news, all the lights on the dash light up, and there is what I presume to be a continuous buzzer noise. I think its the buzzer noise associated with the brake light warning light (The brake light, VSC, CEL, traction VSC off all light up)

After looking through the forum, I saw something about low brake fluid causing the brake light, checked it and it was fine. Next I checked the fuses, then I spotted the blown fuse, fuse # 53 (one that involves the ABS system and traction and a whole bunch). I've blown 4 additional fuses trying to fix it, but as of now, no success. (It uses the green 40 amp Jcase type of fuse)

The ride is a 2006 4wd V8 4runner.

Does anybody have any ideas on how to find the short, or have any thoughts on what to do. Suggestions on what else to check?

I also tried unplugging the cable that connects to the brake master cylinder area (the cable that some people unplug to disable the VSC) to stop the buzzer sound, but it did nothing.


A second question, worst come to worst, anyone have any dealer recommendations around the SE TN \ Chattanooga area? I bought the 4runner from cobb toyota but I'm living up in the Chattanooga area now. I hate to do it, especially since the warranty ended about 3 weeks ago.

Any signs of rodents living around or in your runner? Seems like a lot of fuses blowing without a resonable cause. Jump starting and replacing a battery shouldn't blow any fuses as long as it is done right.
 
I have an '03 Limited V8 and i still have my original "Panasonic" battery. Anywayz --when you replaced your battery, did you reset everything?
 
Mikestoy, What exactly do you mean by reset everything?


I think that I have a short somewhere and is blowing the # 53 fuse, and is the reason for the "brake light" light being lit. I'm guessing that light in turn is setting off the CEL which in turn lit up the VSC and everything else.

any further thoughts would be appreciated
 
See this thread about "reset everything".

It sounds like you have much bigger problems than that will fix. Definitely seems like a wiring problem somewhere.

You might try checking the trailer plug and its wires under the rear bumper.
 
Do you have anyway to get the vehicle scanned to check for codes? I'm thinking maybe a shorted solenoid in the ABS or something like that if your wiring looks ok. Squirrels ate my friend's dodge ram wiring and it was blowing fuses as well.

I am having the exact same issue with my 4R. Same year, Limited V6 4wd.

Any help would be HUGELY appreciated!

What led up to the problem occuring?
 
pretty much the same as lazarus...parked for 6 months, dead battery, attempted jump, new battery. now starts and idles, all electrical works, but all lights are on in cluster, loud consitent beeeeep, and no throttle.
 
Anyway...
I have my throttle back. Replaced a 10 amp fuse. Still have a short somewhere though. All electronics seem to work, but ABS fuse is blown and all warning lights (as well as buzzer) are still on. I've tried disconnecting the battery (for an hour+) and replacing the 40 amp ABS fuse, only to have it blow as soon as battery is connected again. All fuses are intact (fuse box under hood and at dash) except for the 40 amp ABS fuse.

Can anyone point me in the right direction as far as where to possibly find the short?

Take an ohm meter to the abs sensors first.

I know on the old Mr2 when the alternator went out it lit up all the dash lights. You may want to have the alternator checked.
 
Ok, so..

The alternator is good as far as I can tell.. Putting out 14.2 volts when running.

Ducman: When checking abs sensors with ohm meter, what am I looking for? If no continuity, the sensor is bad..?
With engine off, I'm getting 12.6 volts at the ABS fuse, and I'm guessing a short somewhere is causing fuse to blow when battery is connected. Would a bad sensor cause the fuse to blow?

Not *all* the dash lights are on either. ABS, Brake (!), VSC and TRAC are.

BTW- I'm keeping battery unhooked except for when I am trying things and doing diagnostics. It's new and I know if there is a short, it'll drain the battery.
 
So far we know you have a short somewhere. In order to track it down you just have to start disconnecting the electrical components in the system. If you get to the point where all components are disconnected and it still blows the fuse then you have a short in your wiring harness.

Unless you have a rodent problem, your most likely cause is a faulty component. So if your wheel sensors turn out to be good, try unplugging your abs computer and see if the fuse still blows. If it does go on to the next component, if it doesn't blow after disconnecting the computer, then there is an internal short and you'll have to replace it.

So the ABS sensors are ok. All close to 1000 ohms of resistance.

Looks like my ABS computer is shorted :(

Fuse held when computer was unplugged, then popped immediately upon re-connection. Daaaaaaaang.

Anyone know if and/or where used units are available? I can't afford a new one right now, but would like to get this fixed.

In the interim, is there any way to turn off the ABS warning buzzer? I'd like to at least be able to drive my 4R.

I would try ebay or a scrap yard. If you can get the part# of it, theres a good chance that Toyota/Lexus uses that same computer in other vehicles so it might be easier to find if you can look for it in many different models.

If you leave the computer unplugged does the buzzer stop? Or if you pull all the fuses associated with ABS because I believe there is more than one. OR you could always unplug the buzzer if you can find it.
