I'm struggling between a RTT or a nice ground tent (with cots likely). I like the idea of an awning connected to something like a Darche tent. Plenty of room to move around and the option to add walls to the awning in colder temps would be ideal (I think). Mostly camping will be me and one of my teenage sons, possibly my wife and younger daughter in the future. I could be taking my Weimaraner at some points as well.

OzTent. you can scale them up in size by adding a room or even a smaller sip on tagalong tent I throw min on the roof rack and have it up in about a minute.

I love my ARB awning and tent. I don't think roof top tents are worth the absurd price. Plus a ladder and you can't stand up. I put 2 cots in my awning tent plus the dog sleeps in the middle. Same setuptime as a lot of the RTT s out there.

OzTent. you can scale them up in size by adding a room or even a smaller sip on tagalong tent I throw min on the roof rack and have it up in about a minute.

I would love to see a picture of the Oz tent on your roof rack. How big is your roof rack and what do you use for the floor?

it’s a 3rd gen 4runner. You can see more details if you scroll through my build thread. The floor of the tent is a very think vinyl floor , they sell floor savers, which i am in the market for. the flor saver also extends out under the awning.

That thing is bad ass. I was strongly considering getting one, but I went a different direction and ended up getting a 10x10 Kodiak Canvas Flex-Bow Tent. I wanted a good 4 season tent option and they have had a lot of kick ass reviews in crazy weather. I also just picked up a ENO hammock system to have as an option if it makes more sense to run that in a particular situation.

I really like the easy set up that the Oztents offer though. But man! That thing is LONG! Is that the RV-5? Great perspective on the tent size though. Have and pics of it set up?

Yeah it’s 6.5 feet long. It’s and RV-4. The RV-5 is the same size packed up. I actually get it on the rack by myself, I slide it up there from the back of the rack, gravity and geometry do most of the work honestly. Kodiak tents are cool too. We went with the Oz Tent because all the crap you can get later on like zip on walls, extra awnings, even an extra tagalong tent. It is solid as a rock in wind and i mean STRONG wind. The new series, i think are the RX. nice improvements over the RVs.

The roof line looks bowed here but it is not, it’s just how the awning rolled up. We fit to Teton sports cots in it with a little table, nice and cozy. if it’s a one nighter we just use our self inflating mats.

The GF bought it on Etsy or whatever it's called. Looks like an FJ40 and comes apart for easy transport. Works great!

Yup. That thing is pretty cool. Had I known for sure that I was going to get a RMR roof rack, I would have been more tempted to look into these a bit more. To me, for what I do, and where I live, it would make WAY more sense than a RTT. It rains here too much for those. Not that RTTs don't hold up in the rain or anything, but you still need to be able to dry them out. I don't fit in my garage as is. I would have to dismount it, and then set it up in the garage to air out if it was still raining. An Oztent would be perfect. It doesn't take up much room. It is fast to set up and break down, and doesn't have to live on a roof when you are not using it.

I might look into these more down the road. Besides my Kodiak Canvas, I just added a ENO hammock system to my arsenal. I plan on tossing that in the rig as an alternative option in case I don't want to set up a tent. We'll see how that goes. Lots of people swear by them. I figure if there are no trees, I can string it up between two roof racks and be good to go.

Thanks for the ideas about awning and oz tent,etc. Was thinking a rtt was my best option, but those seem a lot more cost effective.

Seconded on the OzTent. I have an RV-5 and it’s been great the couple times I’ve had it out. Real test comes in August when I head to Portsmouth Island for a few days.
