I purchased my 2017 SR5 to be more capable on and off highway.
Since it is a DD I am not bolting much onto it.
My completely removable camping gear: folding cot eith pads, awning with reflective tarps, dmall cheap tire pump to be upgraded with better tires.
Homemade rear window screens, portapottty bucket with kitty liter, folding camp chair, multipurpose lowtable, electric spigot for 3 gal water jug, Various stoves, 2 ice coolers.

Here is a YouTube Vid from someone who has actually used the 4runner for her own type of overloading for over 180,000 miles the last 6 years. Not many using there rigs that much / per year for “overlanding”. She is not really a “gear head”, but makes up for lack of technical knowledge by really understanding her “use case”.

Overlanding is something I'd like to do more of. I've currently invested in a few items to help me keep going in more remote areas and trying to get setup to be able to work off grid as well.
Recently purchased a cheap refrigerator (alpicool 55qt), battery bank with solar, and I'm testing out a mobile router from Cradlepoint, the R1900, to see if it's sufficient data to keep me working in certain remote destinations. Though I may need to look at satellite.
Also purchased a cheap roof rack to help me lug some of this stuff, as I'm running out of room in the 4 runner.
Next steps is to build a drawer system in the back of the 4runner and long term goals is to have a trailer.
Do many of you overland on your own? I've always been cautious when going out in the bush to always bring 2 vehicles in case something happens to one. But then you're limited to other peoples schedules and I find I don't get out as often as I'd like.

Depending on how extreme your definition of over landing is (as opposed to wheelin’), you can go very mild on the build. It’s kind of a rule to never go out on your own, but I know many do. I probably wouldn’t, but my situation is different than many.
Oh and that fridge will be worth it’s weight in gold. I wish I had invested in one when I had the chance.

I am just getting my rig setup to go out and be away for a few days at a time. Where I live, I'm never too far from someone I know, so I would consider a solo, tame trip on forest service roads, but only after I get my HAM license. The job I do demands that I'm available almost 24x7x365, so I would likely also have satellite internet with me... I am still hesitant to go out alone, though. Everything is fine until it isn't, then you get to be on the news!

Can anyone tell me, roughly, the cubic feet that a flat-with-the-cab canopy adds to a 5 foot Tacoma bed? I am finding it surprisingly hard to find canopy dimensions online.
Looks like the bed itself is about 38 cubic feet. Does a canopy that does not stick above the cab roughly double that number?

I assuming you're referring to a truck bed topper/camper shell, I would say a little less than the bed mostly because the toppers are usually tapered from the bed up to the top to follow the taper the cab of the truck, while the bed is more or less square, also not sure it the height would be the same, you need to measure from the bottom of the bed to the top of the sides and compare that to the measurements from the sides of the bed to the top of the cab, all of this has to be put into the equation and then do the math.

Any recommendations on places to explore on an east-west coast XC trip?
Moving to Portland in the next week and driving from the PA. Thinking of taking 94 to 90 and heading through Montana, Northern Idaho, and dropping down through Washington.
Any recommendations on places / routes / trout habitat to stop at would be greatly appreciated!

Condolences on your move to Portland...be sure to transit Yellowstone from Cody west through the park...plan 2-3 days to get a decent look...want more beauty then head north to Glacier NP...from there come back down to the valley of the moon and the falls along 84/82 into Portland...
