The only things I can think of is the intake and exhaust designs. The engine might be the same but they breathe differently. The intake box to the intake manifolds might be different as well as the exhaust manifolds and the bends in the exhaust pipe going to the rear. Cats might play a small part.

There is a 15 HP and 26 lbs difference between the 5 models' engines. There has always been a difference between these models that was based on intake and exhaust design. Even though the 4Runner has the least of the models, it is the lightest and will most likely have the best performance numbers.

The reason Toyota has 5 different designs is because they fit in different chassis' with different space requirements.
 
Correct, different architecture leads to different designs. Since the 4Runner is the most compact of the listed vehicles, it will be affected the most. For example, look at the exhaust pipe that runs laterally across the vehicle from the left cylinder bank under the foot wells of the driver and front passenger, it is flattened to maximize ground clearance, thus restricting flow. The same with the stock intake system. The s-shaped tube from the smaller airbox to the TB is hardly efficient for smooth, low resistance air-flow, but its all the space they have to work with.

You want the HP of the big boys, replace the exhaust and intake with more efficient versions of both and you'll get the 15HP and 26 ft-lbs back. Oh yeah, good luck finding an intake for the '05...
 
The diffrence is like you said, due to the diffrent models, they have to keep the power from each truck at a certain stage. Why whould you spend the money on a Land Cruiser if the 4Runner produced the exact same numbers? Other then the options and it being bigger, some people look at a vehicle for the power of the engine.

For example, my last car was an Acura RSX Type S. The TypeS model was a 2.0lt 200HP motor with a manual 6 speed trans. The base model, or AKA non TypeS model, put out 140HP, same motor, same size, just diffrent cams, intake and throttle body, and exhaust, and only came in a 5 speed or an automatic, no 6 speed option for that model The TypeS only came with the 6spd trans, nothing else.

If they market all thsoe vehciels with the same motor, they will sell a ton of the cheaper cars since it has the expensive car motor. The other higher priced cars wont sell as much.
 
I have a feeling that it goes beyond the intake and header design. Sure that does account for a bit of it, but i have good reason that it comes to ECU tuning for premium octane. Hence why the GX/seq. is recommended to run on premium and we are left to fend with crap water.

I have yet to talk to Jet about having them flash my ECU but i have a feeling that when i do speak with them, there should be quite an interesting discusssion.

The program is 300 bucks and when combined with the magnaflow exhuast should net quite a nice power gain in pkg for roughtly 800 bucks, sans an intake. If someone finally gets up off thier arse and makes one, it should really open that engine up.

Be sure to ask the JET people to convince you why they're re-program is better than replacing the intake system with a programmable/controllable MAF system.

I've been tossing around the idea of sending to JET, but I've read in more places than one that it is a waste of money.

Check out splitsec.com go to products and check out the 3.5" MAF kit. For $800 (maybe a little steep) you get a low resistance more accurate MAF, and you can continually re-program it yourself using a laptop (have a winter and summer program) plus you can keep the stock airbox or upgrade to a cone filter in front of the MAF. I've heard this setup is good for 20-30 HP in an engine like ours.
 
Hmm..800 on a maf is a bit on the pricey side. Sure i have paid that much for BMW tuning but thats BMW. ITs always expensive

I think I asked this question before...not sure it got answered...

Other than the new SAE rules for testing...maybe the 2006 V8 rating is lower because of the octane rating.

I remember a while back someone listed engine specs on the 2006 V8s...for the 4Runner, it had listed the gas as 87 octane rating (for the ratings test).

In the 2005 V8, which I have, it states in the manual that high (91) octane is recommended but can run on 87 with reduced performance.

Wondering if in 2004/5 they tested with premium gas, but decided to test with regular gas in 2006, as that is what most people would end up buy for the 4runners...more real world type thing.

anywho...just wondering...

Yes, I do agree with you (in most cases)...But, if an modern computerized engine is tuned to use high octane, using a lower octane gas may cause knock which causes the timing to retard thereby producing slightly less hp.

Is it a significant amount...what is a significant amount?

Also make you wonder what manufactures mean by 'better performance', 'reduced performance', and such when referring to gas octane.

I was just wondering if maybe the 2004/5 V8 4Runners were 'tuned' and dyno'd on high octance...whereas, maybe the 2006 was 'tuned' and dyno'd with standard octance gas.

Maybe that would explain the hp/torque differences between 05 and 06...other than the new SAE rules.

There has never been any information on neither this forum nor anywhere else on the web that suggests that using 87 octane or mid-grade fuel has caused the engine to knock.

Additionally, I think it would take pretty extreme conditions to even get 85 octane to cause engine knock.

There is even an example somewhere on this forum where someone w/ a V6 (highest compression of the two engines) hooked a scanner up to the computer and drove hard on two separate tanks of 91 & 87 octane fuel and under no conditions did he record timing retardation once.

Plain and simple the numbers are less because of the SAE standards.
