Almost got a 4Runner.

Almost brought a 2004 4runner V8 Limited today. But had to have the mechanic check it out, the seller would not go below 12k. Here is a list of the issues we discovered.

CV Joints
transmission leak, (Hose)
Power steering leak
Timing belt needs to be done, it is at 105k now.
also the rear shocks looked really rusty and in need of replacement.

Title was clear, and lots of repair documentation.


It had the typical rust, mostly surface stuff. I don't know much about 4Runners, but my 1999 Maxima has no rust, and these trucks are not looking like they will last another 10 years.

After my mechanic took it off the lift the traction warning light would not stay off. The seller was getting pissed and thought something was done to his 4runner. But I was with the mechanic the whole time and all that was done was it was lifted, and and ODBII scanner was plugged in. I took it as an omen and backed out of the deal. All in all, I lost 100 bucks (down payment) , and tipped the Mechanic 25 bucks (lunch money).

12K? that's kind of expensive for an 04

I used KBB to get an idea of the price, 13k in good condition, then started taking away for rust and a broken rear wiper, nicks and scratches, and about 800 for timing. I figured 12k, without any other issues. But other issues showed up, I figured at 10.5k I would have taken it. But I don't have much experience dealing with cars.

How many miles does its have?? If its got 40k miles thats not bad but if its got 120k miles for $12k...keep looking

these trucks are not looking like they will last another 10 years.

Mines got 152k miles on it and runs like a champ. Entire powertrain/driveline is original. Its had all the standard 4th gen issues (manifold tick, dash crack, driveshaft thump, caliper seizes etc) but I repaired what I could and I live with the rest and I'm happy with the result. Frame needed paint is some areas, did that last fall and now 11 years old and looks new. She'll still be kicking in ten years, I'm sure not trouble free but worth every penny in my book :driving:

Forgot to add, if this 4runner doesn't look like she'll last, then keep looking, there are good ones out there you just have to weed through the crap

I am still looking, probably saw 10 4runners so far. They all have lots of rust, some just surface, some flakes, some with a lot of other rust related problems. Luckily I have a good mechanic, who saved be from a bad purchase. Oh well back to looking.
