New member here... I've been coming here for few weeks and finally picked up a 4runner last weekend thanks to everyone here.
I got the 2004 Sports edition V6 in Galactic Gray with side/curtain airbags, 115 plug, homelink, rear spoiler, dual cargo, floor mats... I think that was about it. I paid $28100...I hope I got a decent price but doesn't really matter, this SUV is awesome. Ok, here we go with some questions.

1. Can I accidentally push the shifter into reverse while driving? Didn't mention anything about it in the manual and I'm not about to test it myself. I'm sure there is some type of lockout system in place.

2. Is it possible to just purchase and install the 10 speaker system?

3. How long did it take you guys to finally set the chair to your liking? I play with it every single time I drive and I still haven't found it yet.

Thanks!

Aloha and welcome aboard! Did you pick up the 4WD version? If you did that is an excellent price! Good job negotiating...

1. I would venture a guess that you couldn't do this because there would be a lot of dead transmisions if you could. It's probably gated so you can't go into reverse after 5mph or something like that... I remember on my 5spd celica you couldn't go into reverse until you coasted to an almost stop.

2. Why would you want to? You can probably get aftermarket speakers much better than the stock JBLs.

3. Mine is set and nobody better change gosh darnit or heads will roll! :D ;):

1. yeah its way to easy to hit R if you shift kinda fast from 3rd. from what i can tell there is no shift lock going from a drive/neutral gear to R, when you do hit R the transmission wont engage right away.

2. no clue

3. i still cant find the right position and its been 3months. after about 10-20 mins my butt goes numb on the right side from the seat. i never had this problem in the 3rd gen seats or my wife's 02 tacoma.

howzit hawaiian!! can't help ya with your questions, but welcome and congrats on the new ride!! looking forward to some pics what part of honolulu you from?

shifting into R for Race

According to Toyota, the shifter is gated, although it looks like it is probably a "soft gate" since everything is computer controlled. In theory, you could push the shifter into R but it would not engage until you stopped, but I wouldn't try it.

As far as the 10 speaker system... Have to agree... Why bother.. you can get a better system without the aggravation. But if you really want, yea you could do it. All of the wire harnesses should be there, although you may have to do some fishing around to find those connectors.

Aloha!

1. It would be hard to accidently shift into reverse. I assume you mean by tapping it or if something hits it. The only way it would shift into reverse is if you actually forced it.

2. Why would you want the JBL? I do not think it is possible because you would have to find a way to add 4 more speakers.

3. It took me like 5 minutes. I pushed it all the way back, raised it to how high I wanted it, set it as straight as it goes, and then adjusted the lumbar support.

I have the JBL system and it works just fine - although I have to admit, sound is subjective and opinions can vary widely. The 10-speaker system's trebles and midranges are just fine, but the bass could use some work. That's just me, though.

If you really want to customize your sound, you are better off buying the standard 6-speaker system and head to the aftermarket.

Thanks for the replies.

I got the 2WD model cuz I don't plan on climbing mountains anytime soon and didn't see the need for it. I wanted the stock speakers because the theft rate in Hawaii is unbelievable. I don't even want to change my head unit. I already debadged my 4runner in fear of some punk scratching my car while trying to steal the letters. I think it looks cleaner/smoother and also easier to wax.

I just got my tint done today so I'll take some pics after I shine it up a bit. I think I went too dark but it looks so damn good...
