Alpine Type S and Hifonics 4channel HELP HELP HELP!!!!

Okay, so here's the plan (if you guys help me out i PROMISE i'll put up a build thread with lots and lots of pictures, which i know you all love!)


i have TWO sets of 6.5 Alpine Type S component speakers in my room. i wanted to get them professionally installed but it's way too expensive, so i'm going to install the speakers myself and then get best buy to install my amp since i dont trust myself taking apart the dash, getting to the battery, etc.

i need help with the whole 6.5 install in my front doors and the tweeter install on my rear doors. i know the factory speaker is 6x9 so i'm gonna need to do some modification.. anyoneeee pleaseeeee help me with that - or does anyone know of a thread detailing a component install? i just need a "component speaker install for dumbies book" or thread! :)

ALSO!!! i have the PAC wire adapter thing to make my Pioneer headunit work with the jbl system - that thing takes up two RCA outputs on my headunit i think... and i need two for my 4 channel amp.. is it gonna be a problem to take that out? ahhhhh so much i dont understand!

I can give you a hand. Timing may be a bit troublesome as I have some holiday travels planned and won't be around consistenly until January.

I haven't done any research on your car, so give me the rundown on everything you want done and I'll tell you what I'm comfortable with and what I'm not.

Speakers shouldn't be an issue, amps are no problem, HUs are no biggie. If you're looking for factory integration I may have to bow out (steering wheel controls, BT, etc).

Give me a list of everything you want installed (brands/models) as well as anything that has already been done to the truck. Also add in anything that you think may be non-standard in your installation. I will dig into what it takes and make sure you have everything you need before we start.

Here's my disclaimer: I was a professional installer a LONG time ago. Some things have changed, so I have to do more research prior to tackling an install as opposed to just jumping in. I have a garage that we can take of this in as well. I would prefer doing this on a Mon,Tues or Wed but I see that you're in school so we'll figure out what works for both of us.

This is great. Thank you so much. But we might run into another problem because I actually am leaving the country for 5 months at the end of January... but I will list my equipment and what I need. I'm not worried about steering wheel controls or BT, so that's good news!

I have the 2004 SR5 4Runner with JBL Synthesis


Speakers: 2 sets of 6.5 Component Speakers - Alpine Type S 85 watt RMS. I'll need to drill a hole in the rear doors to mount them (possibly flush?)

Amp: Hifonics Zeus ZXI 6400 4 Channel Amp 85x4

Also, I have ambitions of a mono amp as well, but will not be doing that for awhile, but my brother might while I'm abroad, so I'll need a dual amp kit I have yet to purchase (=/).


Where do you live? What do you do?

I live over by the Albuquerque Academy. I'm an ex-Intel geek (recently layed off).

I'll do a bit of digging and get a complete list of stuff needed. I assume that you are retaining the stock HU??? I'll see if that HU has any built in eq or crossovers that may cause troubles.

No, sir! I have a Pioneer head unit - this years model - DEH-P5100UB

But I also have a PAC piece of equipment that allows me to retain my JBL synthesis system... i think that takes up two RCA inputs... but is removable?

BTW - I go to school at Sandia Prep - so I'm close.

The JBL Sythesis system consists of your factory deck, amps and speakers (and all the signal processing they include). That interface is made so that you can retain the factory amps and speakers but replace the HU. Since you're replacing the factory amp and speakers it shouldn't be necessary.

I assume there is a factory sub? If so, I'm not sure yet how to incorporate it into your new system since you don't have another aftermarket amp to power it. I'd bet we can get it powered with the Hifonics amp you have, but you will not have any way to control the front-rear fader if we use that amp for everything.

Actually, I was completely wrong about the PAC piece - what I have is a "Amplified System Interface" by Axxess - it retains my factory amp turn on.

And that's all I have.

I'm not worried about the stock amp/sub, if I have a dual amp kit wired, I can probably borrow a friends mono amp and any one of his many subs to suffice for the time being. Let's not make this any more challenging than need be.

You won't need that adapter either, the Pioneer will have a remote turn on.

A few more questions...
Where do you want to mount the amps?
Do you have a mounting kit for the deck?
Do you have a wiring harness adapter or are you OK with the factory harness being cut to wire the Pioneer?

EDIT - Pioneer deck is already installed!

I'll mount the amps in the back on some heavy wood for now... velcro on the bottom of the wood.
 
Cool, nothing looks that terribly difficult.

From what I can gather, here's what you still need to get.

- Get a 4 ga amp wiring kit since you are planning on adding another amp later.
- You will need 3 sets of RCA cables long enough to go from your deck to where you want to mount your amps.
- Even though your speakers come with wire, it may not be a bad idea to get something sturdier (14-16ga) when you're buying the other parts. Get 100'.

We can make the adapters for the front speakers to fit in the 6x9 holes and the rears look like drop in fit so that's not an issue at all. The tweeters should be easy all around. If I think of anything else I will post up here.

I was thinking we could do this in stages to make it easier in scheduling. i.e. one day we could run all the wire, the next mount front doors, then rear doors the last day. That way we could knock it off after you get out of school during the week. That way it shouldn't take more than an hour or so each day.
 
Okay, that sounds great. Today I didn't go to school becayse of the roads up here, and I took off the rear door panel, un-installed the JBL speaker, and then had no idea what to do. I got the cross over wire stuck on one of the terminals on the Alpine speaker, I don't know if it was even the right terminal, i'm freaking out right now... definitely should of waited for your help.

But the good news I got the panels on and re-installed the JBLs with no problem.. I guess i'm just happy i didn't break anything.

Also, we could install the speakers, and then I could get best buy to do the amp and then we would have to worry about that? I don't know what you're thoughts are on that.

It would probably be better to do the entire install oursleves since we can plan out what the next step is and how everything is routed. Turning it over to another installer will result in them having to spend time figuring out what we did. Not to mention piece-mealing it will result in having to redo some of it in the next stage. The more I think about it, I'd bet we can get it done in probably 2 hours/day for 2 days. And you won't be left without tunes for any of that time.

Let me know when you get the amp kit and RCAs and we'll work on a time.

Okay, well what days work for you next week? Next week I have finals and I don't have to be at school all the time, I.E. i might have a two hour block free where I don't have a final in the morning, but we'll have to go in that afternoon.

Tue - I'm free from 11 - 3
Wed -11 - 3
Thursday - 11 - 3

I'm sure we could easily get it done on any one of those days, what do you think? My friend will join us too, he's really into car audio, also. I hope that's okay.
