alrighty, my transmission blew yesterday. What can I get for my rig?

Hello everyone.

I have a 98 red 4runner limited with e locker and leather interior. Its got 190000 miles on it. The auto transmission went on it yesterday. Not sure whats wrong with it, it struggles to move in any gear. What my car worth? Should I part it out? sell it whole. I'm probably just going to buy another car. haven't decided on that yet either.

There's a slight possibility that i may replace the transmission, but at this point I kind of just want something new. plus I have another 2000 4runner with only 100K that runs great.


so let me know your opinions/offers!

BTW. I'm in New england.

the car is in great shape, no rot, and interior is in very nice condition (1 tear in the drivers side bolster cushion leather)

Your at the wrong place if your expecting to hear someone say, "sell it."
Most of us here would probably take our tranny apart and resolve the issue. It does not sound like a bad car. It is mainly up to you but in terms of parting, prices can vary indefinitely. If you want to sell your runner to someone FOR parts, then sell it for like $2000.

I agree, just fix the transmission and then sell it if you want. If you don your own work it's not that hard, and if you don't; one you repair it and sell it you'll still make money on it.

Fix it....if your asking the trucks not worth not much with busted trans....if you fix it (a rebuild is around 2500-3000) and then sell it you would get more for it.....I would also weight the next four or five years in car payments againts the 2-3k to fix the trk...as is your trk may bring in maybe 2-3k w/busted trans....

Hi guys, I'm new here and this is my first post but I just wanna say don't do it. Get it fixed. I just bought my first 3rd gen 2 weeks ago and it's the best vehicle I have ever owned. Transmissions come and go on so many vehicles but starting all over again with a newer vehicle, you have to trust that someone took care of it and you can never be totally sure. At least this way, you know you have a great tranny after it's fixed that will last for years, and if that the only problem wrong with it, I would say hold on to it.

If you are definitely wanting to sell it, at the least, put in a used transmission. At least have it running, and as mentioned already, if you do the labor yourself, your return on the sell will be much higher with a working vehicle. I would think that you could repair it for more around the ~500 dollar range (It's not the ideal way, but it at least works).

I agree. I had a bit of a scare with my 4Runner and was looking for a low milage motor that possibly needed to be replaced. Long story..... but any ways. I was quoted 2500 for a motor with 98k miles on it with labor and everything. That being said, I know tranny shops will rebuild one for much cheaper. I would say, call around to some local shops, first ask if they do rebuilds and get a quote, Than find out how much a used lower milage install would be with labor and all. I'm thinking should be well under 2000 for a rebuild and maybe close to 2000$ on the pricey side for a used install.

I agree w everyone on here...at least fix it and then make a decision. My tranny went on me at arnd 220,000miles due to the milkshake. Picked me up a used one at junk yard for $400, me and my dad popped it in and been running great since.

Don't waste money paying to have someone rebuild it. You can get a brand new Toyota transmission for a little over 1500 bucks. A good rebuild can cost more than that

I agree with Jag above. We need more info. Have you checked the fluid? When they get low they won't move. Is it full? How does it look?

Ahhhhh what? Where can you buy a brand new OEM trans for $1500?
I think the correct price is about $3000 - $3500 for a Toyota auto-trans.

OP,
You should be able to buy a used one for $500 to $750 with no warranty.
Rebuild with a 12 month warranty should cost $1500-$2000.

I agree with dous. A rebuild might cost as much if not more than buying one from the dealer. Carson Toyota/Lexus/Scion sells transmissions for about $1500 (with $1000 core charge) for your 98. Not sure if this price is consistent throughout all dealers but you might be able to get your local dealer to match the price.

I would say keep it if you can get a tranny for $1500! just search up and down for a good tranny shop with good prices and you'll be good to go.
