Im new to this forum but have been searching for an answer to my problem since April '08. I have a 99 SR5 4runner and I love it. Its my baby but since a road trip in april its been acting up.
I had just filled up gas in calgary and was on the way too banff when I noticed the check engine light on. I pulled over and checked under the hood. Nothing out of the ordinary, called my mecahnic and he said check the fluids (did taht) and smell the engine (did that) Is it doing anything funny? No. Running fine, just filled up the tank. the manual says it could throw the code for check engine if you over tighten the gas cap adn its cracks the sensor there, didnt do that.
Theres nothing wrong with it as always.
Went on to banff, nothing wrong with it.
Came back home and after awhile, still driving with the light on, waiting to get it to the stealer-ship, it starts acting funny.
Upon start up the rpms would soar. I mean like 2000 and eventually settle donw but that huge. SO that went on for awhile. Then the rpm's would soar at a stop light in drive and when put in N they would drop and immediately rise to almost 2000 again and when dropped back into drive lunge froward and settle out again.
Then in the summer, the light still on, the variation went to the rpm's would vary while drive at a constant speed in the city at any apeed. You go 60 km and keep it there with your foot and the rpms would change from 1700 to 1900 with no change in speed. Some times after that there would be a much more noticeable lurching forward while the rpms are varying but still no change in speed.
This has been going on for a long time now and it has been in the shop 4 times and each time with different codes and I cant even recall now. But the techs cant figure it out.
PLESE HELP!!!!!!
I have changed out the spark plugs, still the same
I have changed out the MAF, still teh same
They say its not the O2 sensors be/c the codes are not for that.
Its not a vacuum leak.
Next i will do spark plug cables but it wont be that.
What its doing now is the same thing but sometimes slightly less noticeable and sometimes quite pronounced lurching forward witht eh varying rpm. The gas mileage has sky rocketed!!!!!!!! I used to get 420 km easy to teh tank now I barely get 300
Its getting expensive!!!!
