Alternative to Painting the Chrome (Pics)

For those saying it wont withstand the elements, they do full vinyl wraps on cars that are supposed to outlive the paint life. No snags, or something may be different. I say a flat vinyl job on a 7 series that was about $10k

Saw this post and had to chime in. Check out this site read the FAQ and put the horror stories to bed. I saw an install of one of these on youtube and a crew attacked a ferrari with windex to strip it before applying the wrap. Wax certainly does sound like a bad idea for an underlayment.

Would a 3rd gen look "riced out" in matte black?

Im not talking about a lowered street job that you wouldnt be caught dead in, Im talking about a rig like blacktpgsr's or Millerpka's. Can I be the only one who thinks the mad max wrap looks cool?

That vinyl will not outlast paint and my friend who does vinyl install for ads on cars said it will last up to 5 years or more in nicer climates but in areas that see extreme cold temps and snow and rain along with places that salt or sand the roads the vinyl will show wear and tear after a 2-3 years but it's still not a bad idea to use but it's not as permenant as paint. Warranties are a solid 5 years but after that you'd be on your own.

Also off road vinyl will snag on brush that comes in contact with it as opposed to paint which you can buff out minor scratches. I personally might use vinyl on a car that the paint has become a bit tired looking but I wouldn't put it on a new paint and would just simply take care of it and wax regularly and keep the vehicle garaged if possible.

No I think it would look awesome. The vinyl wrap doesn't look bad at all. My good friend did a ty-dye wrap and a big skull on his hood of his PT Cruiser (don't ask) and it actually came out real well, he did it himself too and all if it held up for about two years. He took it off later to sell the car and paint was fine after peeling it all off.

I'd like to keep this mod in mind for future reference I know that. I just painted both chrome bumpers black but when they start to chip away down the road I'll try it out.

I checked out the link to the BMW site as well, and it was indeed a good writeup. However, I'm still unclear on whether the seam edges are just lined up or overlapped?

I also wonder if it is possible to buy only a small amount of the material - the only areas that I would be doing are the rear bumper corners, and the grill (since the front bumper will already be black a la Shrockworks).

It will definitely be on my list to do - maybe in conjunction with the Satoshi mod.

I think the Vinyl has an advantage over paint in that you dont have nasty looking chips come off from it not adhering to the chrome/paint. It's also something you can do and after a while be like "hmmm, I'm kind of over it, I'm just gonna peel it off." So its not necessarily permanent.

You should just be able to go to a local sign store and buy a few feet from them.

THis is great, I think I will be wrapping my own 4runner flat black like that BMW. looks great!

Do a write up if you do....I'd love to see what a Runner looks like with flat black over the paint. I think it can pull it off and look awesome.
