alternator replacement

Hi,

Yes - I've searched, there's no write up. :) Is it rocket science to replace the alternator? Or I just unscrew two bolts (the large top one, and the smaller adjustment one below the alternator itself) and pry it out, putting in the new one in place?

Thanks for any tips. :) My current one is giving a very unnerving whistling sound and I hope it doesn't die before the replacement arrives. :)

timing belt and all the other belts were replaced ~6000 miles ago. It's just original alternator that gives the whizzing, unnerving sound. Ordered a new one - should get it soon. :)

They're very easy to do, pretty straight forward. FWIW, mines been making that noise for a while now too.
 
looking from the top - it just looks a bit tight there - can I do all the tasks from the top (probably will remove battery to have some more room) - or do I need to remove the skid plate and reach the smaller bolt from the bottom?
 
You can easily do it all from the top. I did it last year in mid january in a part store parking lot in less than 15 mins. Biggest issue for me was disconnecting the wiring harness. I ended up pulling the old alternator off the bracket with the harness still connected, then I could turn it over and get a good angle at it with plyiers. Otherwise very straight forward.
 
new alternator (bosch) installed, the annoying noise is gone.

but... the new one is... chirping. not constantly - just here and there. did I do something wrong? :/

yes you bought a bosch...

you need a denso, do not ever put anything bosch on our truck, toyotas dont like bosch
 
Agree. I once bought bosch distributor cap and wires for my 4afe Toyota engine! Within 2 months, it is completely crap. It leak the high current to the surroundings.. Then bought OEM toyota Denso cap and wires.... Runs like a champ.

I don't know why Germans cannot make anything that can last for years? Benz, BMW all last max 10 years. Can you find any benz BMW that has 225 K miles and 20 years old like my car and STILL RELIABLE?

more power or not I will never consider a GM part an upgrade for a Toyota. I would pick up a second used alternator and add it to the engine before trusting a GM part on something I plan to take out to the middle of nowhere.

I know the newer GM alts are better than the 80/90s era, but I remember swapping those sooo many damn times on my Camaro, Trans Am (yeah i was young and dumb shut up!) and my dad's silverado, that i could never trust one again.

EXACTLY!!!

Carry extra set of brush, IC regulator and diode plate and you should be back on track!
