I have never heard of anyone leaking air because of rim corrosion, but it does kinda look bad on those rims. If it gets any worse it might be a concern. IMO it would just be safer to wait and get ones that are in better condition for a good price.
 
Is that armor-all on the treads? :wtf: On the rims though, can you check them out before commiting to buy? I would snatch those up since it does look like grinding of the wheel, not corrosion.

Mine are corroding, ill post pics tommorow of them. but tommorow i will have new rims of the same style on it.


The treads in the photos are just wet from water, looks like he just washed them.
 
offer him $100 pay $200 to get it sand blasted and powder coated and you'll be good to go.

the sand blast if done properly can take alot of that "rash" out.

Personally, I wouldn't even waste the money on sandblasting or powder coating. Make sure there are no cracks and maybe take them to a tire shop to make sure they're straight and will hold air.

If the clear coat starts peeling (like on my wheels), get one of those paint stripper wheels for your drill or sandpaper and go at it. Then primer/paint your rims what ever color. Painted mine black. For paint, get some Duplicolor wheel paint. Primer can be any generic kind. Mine's held up real well for over a year in some harsh climates and wheeling. Best part is, any chips, simply light spray can job and I'm done.

Not too bad for a $12 paint job, IMO.

if your going this route make sure you get to the bottom of the rust (most likely pitting in your case) and hit it with a rust encapsulator first
like eastwood por-15 or the rustolem brand, search for rust converter, i know it says no sanding but that's b.s. after a few years it'll start to flake and rust again,
so wire brush it till rust is gone and most of the pitting is gone too and then hit it with stuff and follow up with desired paint, fyi, hammer finish also contians some of the same elements used in the above stuff so from my understanding the hammer finish is actually more rust-proof than normal rustolem.
that's if you want a hammer finish on your wheels....i may try that i think it looks sweet!
just take your time and do the prep work right and it'll look good!

Aluminum doesn't rust, so he shouldn't have to worry about rust proofing. Just sanding it all down real well should suffice. But prep work is key, so don't skimp on it.

then wtf was the guy talking about bubbling then? are these painted then?
 
The painted rims definitely corrode. It gets moisture and contaminents under the paint and yu get bubbling and a white chalky build up. I bought a set of rims that have a couple very minor areas. I am waiting on this thread to see if anyone recommends anything besides sanding before painting.
 
Thanks for the input. I think i may keep looking untill i find a little better pair. the chunk out the lip kinda scares me.

p nut your wheels look great.. really like them, thinkin about maybe painting mine until i find the ones im lookin for.
