They are currently the only one that makes a aluminum rear tire carrier bumper. I had it on my previous 4runner which was more of a DD and weight was a huge concern, MPGS stayed the same pretty much and if you call Chris Hefty he will explain to you how strong it is compared to steel, a lot of work went into producing a aluminum one that could handle all the stresses steel could.
There's no doubt that Chris's work is fantastic. I'm just having a difficult time swallowing that price tag. Maybe I'll just have to wait until the next sale or 20% off or whatever.

Whoa! Got excited then saw what they use for swing out hinges. But for the price, I guess you can't complain.

I don't like the idea of having aluminum in a highly susceptible spot for dragging while offroad. It just cant take the beating that steel can and our runners are really good at using the rear bumper as a skid plate. If you do dent or drag aluminum it stretches and looks like hell.

This is the exact reason I went steel as well for my rear bumper. Was more comfortable running aluminum in the front because of the reduced chance of smashing into things. Although I have bashed it into rock and the Aluminum seems to be holding up just fine.

Been eyeballing these for years, I am in the same boat as you. Depending on your options most rear bumpers (apart from one or two) are close to that $3000 price range. Man and the weight, the bumper, cans, a drawer set, and you hare adding another couple hundred pounds, sans gear, on the rear axle too.

to clarify... None of these are bumpers. the only bumper I've seen for a 5th gen is 4x4 labs. these are all bumper covers.
The weight is huge.. Aluminum would be so worth it. And it will hold up just fine. I'm hoping someone designs a nice hybrid at some point. Weld in dom tubes with high clearance in the corners. Lightweight aluminum cover with a lightweight swing out that is well supported. Only reason I would ever run a swingout is to carry a tire 35" or bigger. It's better down low for a tire that will fit. Other reason would be to run an anti-rock sway-bar.

That is the only one I have considered buying. The high side protection is a big selling point, the low point is price, cut and weld. Damn nice bumper though.

It's the only one that fully integrates with the frame by cutting and removing the rear most frame crossmember. The bumper itself reinforces the frame at the rear making it stronger and allowing for the highest clearance of any rear bumper on the market. I have seen them in person both on their shop floor and on vehicles and the work is nothing short of awesome. For someone looking to really wheel these 5th gens, that is your best option. Most can do with a more conventional and less invasive rear bumper option.

A couple others have mentioned this already and I am sure there are more companies out there but I have seen the coastal offroad ones in person and they do come out to around $2k vs the $3k for the one you like. I do not like the "handle" on the rear quarter part of the bumper with the coastals but apparently you get order it without according to the owner of the 4runner because I was also curious about aluminum bumpers. In person the rear bumper from coastal offroad seemed pretty nice and well made. The owner said he hasn't had any issues with it yet (bumper itself, hinges, and swing out carriers (he had the dual carries). Although take that with a grain of salt because he had only had it on for a little over 2 months when I was talking to him about it.
I wish shrockworks made their bumpers in an option to use aluminum although they would probably be about the same cost wise.
