Am I an idiot or what? 4th -> 5th?

Ok Fellas, let me have it! I am seriously considering - like scheduled an extensive test drive today- trading my 2007 4wd v8 with 67K, in on a leftover 2010 TE. '07 is paid off and I would be putting up $17,000 for the upgrade.
Why am I considering it?
1. I like the new looks better,
2. More interior room
3. better gas mileage??? get 18mpg consistently now with v8
4. Trail stuff is cool

Cons: afraid I might kick myself in the gonads for letting the 4.7 v8 go. I do some mild towing (ATV etc.) and moderate off-roading for hunting.

Somebody stop me.....or encourage me

Don't do it! Embrace the V8!

I would take some of this $17,000 and buy a small daily driver that gets sweet MPGs. Plus having an extra car is the best thing...ever.

My opinion is keep your '07 with the V8. Wait a couple more years and see if they decide to put a different engine or center diff in the 5th gen then decide.

If you've been reading this forum very long, you'll find lots of lament over the lack of a V8.

All I can say is take some serious test drives, and give yourself a month to think this over.

I would wait untill the mid-generation upgrade for the 5th's, maybe in 2013 or 2014. Might see the addition of a V8 or other nice options like we see on every mid-gen upgrade. You will also lose trade-in-value by then, so its a win-lose. Those trail editions are hard to resist though!

I was in the same boat I had buyers remorse for a few weeks but now I am so glad I bought it. The new V6 has tones of power it just has to be driven differently. Go take one for a spin and see for yourself the 5th gens are awesome. It seems myself and a few other people who crossed over from 4ths love the new 5th.

I've got a 2007 Sport V8 4Runner 4x4 and no way in heck would I ever trade in the vehicle for a 2010, or even a 2011 plus $17K. No Way! Mine has been paid off since day one.

We just picked up our second 4Runner, a 2011, and I pull 2 ATV's or a boat on a normal basis with our 05 V6 SR5. After driving the 2011, I have no doubt that it has more than enough power/torque for medium duty towing. With 85% highway driving, I'm averaging 20.8 MPG. I do like the features, ride height and styling of the 2011. Of course, my family has the best of both worlds, a 5th gen and a 4th.

I don't know much about past 4Runners so here is the reason I would wait:

Hopefully someone in Japan will come to their senses and update the front headlight and rear tail light assembly and make it flush around the ends like every other normal car on the planet and not have them stick out like soar thumbs. Otherwise I really love my 4Runner.

Oh and one more thing. Hopefully they'll put one of those red button's inside the tail gate door so you can close the door automatically instead of reaching up and closing it manually like most SUV's (another failure by Toyota). At least give us the option to pay for it.

Oh and another thing. Hopefully they'll put memory buttons on the driver and passenger seats. I mean really Toyota? How does any Limited Edition vehicle not come with memory buttons on the two front seats?

Oh and one more thing...just kidding. I'm done!

One last thing to consider - if you turn over vehicles every 3-4 years the 2010 better be an amazing price, since it is already effectively one year old in terms of its book value at trade in time. If you are going to drive it until the wheels drop off it makes no difference of course.

Right at the dealer, the "bug eyes" like lights are one of the nitpicks that my wife pointed out.

To the OP - if you really want to buy a new car with great mileage, keep your 2007, and get a Corolla for that money.

If you have get the new T4R, get the 2010, so that you can get a better deal in terms of price.

Actually, lot of new vehicles have similarly strange "protrusions", especially on the headlights. It's not just a 4Runner thing. But I do agree that it would look much better flush, especially on the taillamps.

I would keep your '07. I miss my V8 '06 but the 5.7 V8 is a great replacement when I miss the power. Also wife misses the FT 4wd. I bet they make a V8 and add what we all want in the mid cycle refresh... but styling and overall improvements are much better in 5th gen. Also you should get more than 17k on your trade.

Personally I'm holding out for a V8 in the 4Runner. I have and will probably keep my current 03 V8, as it has been nicely modified for a trail rig.

I have been lookign at the 5th Gens for some time, and will use it as my dd and some moderate trail use. Toyota adds soem features every model year, so it may just be worth it to hold out a bit and see.

I have a 05 v8 Sport... I will not part with it, but I really doubt Toyota will ever put in a v8 in the 4R. Two reasons - they will cannibalize the Lexus GX and the 'perception' is that a v8 is not full efficient - funny because I get the same MPG on my v8 as the 5th Gen.

On my end, I am thinking about trading our other car for a 5 Gen. We would have two 4Rs - why change? In six years of ownership, the 05 has only needed new tires and scheduled maintenance. Yes, there are specific things I do not like about the 5th Gen, but more that I like about it....

well - It seems that most folks said to not trade.......but I aint like most folks I got the 2010 TE with upgraded BFG AT's at $16,285 difference. And the dealer let me rob the old one of the stuff I had put on it. I left there a happy man and have not looked back. Here's how it all went down-

I took the TE for a two hour / 80 mile test drive, even hooked up to a trailer with ATV and climbed a h&lluva mountain with it. This same mtn causes me to downshift my 7.3 powerstroke to hold 45mph with same load. I had to go to 3rd in the t4r but it held 45mph at less than 4k rpm - not bad I thought. The v8 t4r had to do the same shift to maintain the same speed, albeit at a few less rpms.

A few things I noticed: cons
1. yes, it does give up a little "off the line" power to the v8
2. yes, rpm's run a little higher at any given speed
3. The slide-out cargo tray is a p.o.s., that's coming out!

Pros:
1.The power is more than sufficent - Im not a racecar driver. Evenso I find myself going much faster than I feel = the riding experience masks your speed.
2. better gas mileage =so far on one tank of gas, I average 19.2 mpg, stands to improve over time I understand.
3. The interior is much roomier, better laid out. Back seat area much better.
4. The ride is better/smoother, if not quieter - as quiet
5. The off-road capability is equal or better. (Im in the South, so snow/ice is not a consideration)
7. I like the idea of part-time 4wd, locking r-diff is outstanding feature.
6. It looks a lot better to me, much more "tough" looking, not like a glorified mini-van, kinda reminds me of the old "Scout" and even has flavor of old FJ's....hurumph, hurumph
7. Better stock ground clearance. I hunt in rocky terrain with rough rocky roads, so this was a biggie for me.
8. HEADROOM! I'm a big guy.....
9. Electronics - backup camera, bluetooth, etc, etc.
10. water-resistant upholstery.
11. more than 2 power-points! Always thought that was asinine...

All that being said, the pros far outweighed the cons for me. Now if I was a total motor-head, then I can see the appeal of the v8 - I get it. But it was a total package decision for me.

and then there is the $$$$$$ - I just turned 40 :happy bda :cowboy:
