Am I asking too much from my 4Runny

Greetings all,

I found a nice looking boat with good price (from Ebay) and am curring bidding for her. The net weith is 5,200 lbs. Can my 2003 V8 4Runny pull her "safely"? Here's her picture & info (please don't bid - I like to keep the price as it is

Your truck probably only has the small bolt on class III hitch which is only rated at 5000lb.

To safely pull that boat you should upgrade to a class IV hitch. toyota should have a bolt in replacement.

Well the trip back and forth from the lake wont be the funnest drives ever, but with the proper hitch setup and trailer setup it should be doable. Just keep your speed down and drive with caution and you should be fine. Make sure the trailer brakes are working correctly.

I forgot to mention that I have Hidden Hitch 70411 installed. I have never towed anything heavier than 3500lbs. To be honest, I'm nervious about towing anything over 5000lbs. I'll try to stay on the right lane and keep the Runny within minimum highway speed (60mph?).

I tow a 5500lbs Toy Hauler with my 05 4runner 4x4 v8. You will not get not where in a hurry, but it will pull it just fine.

That's awsome! How fast did you go - speed wise and how far did you tow? What type of breaking system does your trailer have?

I was half jokingly and half seriously told by my neighbors that pulling the 5000lbs from the water, on the steep ramp, is not as easy as pulling it on the flat surface and that I should have my sunroof open ..."just in case"... They even went further with STORIES about guy in Minisota whose 4Runner was pulled (submerged) in the water by his boat...

If I win the auction, just a metter of 7-8 hours, I will pull that boat right infront of their eyes :cursin: - showing them that my 4Runny can do the job as heavy as their Tahoe and F-150 can (that's what they own and use to pull their boats from central Illinois to Wisconsin Dell on weekend). By no means, I will never claim that my 4Runny will pull better than theirs:

Personally I would not pull a boat that big unless I had a full size truck or SUV. Just my .02. There is alway's a big difference in a tow rating by a mfg. and a seat of the pant's safety rating , stopping , swaying , overall control feeling.

I had a 26' Cig. boat that was damn near 5000 lbs and if I still had it I would have kept my Tahoe or F150. (Maybe not the tahoe...pos ) .

not sure about the '03, but arent the '05-'06 V8 rated to 7000lbs? 5K lbs seems well below the spec'd capacity..

*edit - just saw that the '03 is rated to 5K..

All V8 4Rs are rated to 7K with the class IV hitch.

The only reason the early 03's were rated at 5K is that they came with a class III hitch rated at 5K.
