Am i the only 4runner owner getting 11mpgs?

As the title says...i am seriously getting 11 mpgs..does this make sense to anyone one? could the fuel filter be bad...someone please help....its pretty bad when my 2001 cammed camaro ss gets better gas mileage then my v6 4runner..wouldnt you guys agree?

i drive this thing no different the i did when i was getting 400 miles on a full tank..i do 70 maybe 75 on the highway

That is way too low for a V6.

This is a good website as it uses modern methods to calculate gas mileage. and your car should be around 15 mpg or there abouts. Toyotas rating is even higher than 15 mpg. Even a Land Cruisers according to this website gets 12 MPG in the city. the big Land Rovers do better than 11 mpg in City

Have you done a tune up lately
The V6 uses regular spark plugs (ie not iridium plugs), so it needs to be changed every 30,000 km or so.

Are you calculating the gas mileage by hand. If not, do a manual calculation, maybe your vehicles display is off. Manual calculation is more accurate.

its in tip top shape no cels no problems...but i do have iridium plugs...could that be the problem?? i have an iphone app that calculates it for me and it says 11 while my computer on the truck says 14

Huh? That is your problem. why are you using your iphone app to calculate it. It's probably based on GPS location, etc, which is not as accurate as your speedometer reading. Why didnt you mention your truck says 14. 14 sounds about right?

Calculate it manually by doing this if you want accuracy:
1. Fill up the gas tank completely
2. Reset the odometer to zero
3. Drive a few days or few hundred miles.
4. Fill the tank again, note the amount of gas you put in.
5. Look at the odometer reading

Now simply take the miles divide by the gas you put in. Miles/gallons.

thats not the problem because i used to get almost 400 miles on a full tank now i barely get 270 miles...the app is actually perfectly accurate..cause i just hand did it and it came up exactly what its telling me

you do it....162 miles filled up to 13.639 gallons = 11.88 mpg

note..my avg is 13.72 but that is still low

also that 162 miles was from a full tank to a 1/4....now tell me something isnt wrong here?

Yeah, bit on the low side. The website is saying around 15mpg and yours is 13.72 so a difference of 1.28 miles for every gallon. At least now it's closer to what it should be. Are you driving within the speed limit?

Not to be rude but if a 4th Gen V6 is getting 12 mpg, it is NOT in tip top shape. Something is def. not right. Clogged cats or intake could cause it, but that would also mean a significant loss in power. Hows tire pressure? Sounds dumb but if all the tires are very low in pressure, that could hurt mpg too. How many miles are on it?

2 or 4wd? Are in 4hi? What kind of tires? Are they inflated properly?

Try resetting the ECM by pulling the breaker for a minute or two.

You aren't using E85 are you:lmao:

If everything is good and you don't have your 1000lb gold stash riding around in the back I'd look at cleaning the throttle body, removing (or replacing) the HCF filter and I won't rule out plugs yet. What type of plug do you have? Air filter good? You aren't trying to run 10w-60 oil, are you?

How cold is it where you live? That can be one of the reasons your getting poor mpg as well as your tire pressure.

tire pressure is perfect..they are firestone destinations at's but this started before the i put those on...i have absolutely no loss in power...it will move when i need it too...im sorry but winter gas/cold weather and not driving the speed limit will not take me from 400 miles on a full tank to not even 270 miles on a full tank...

You are confusing everyone with your 11 MPG title. You said the average is 13.72 so it's not too far from the 15 mpg that it should be. And the 15 mpg is also based on the original stock 4runner. And maybe they tested it with a standard temperature and does not take into account speeding. So again, your is 1.28 miles less than the tested 15 MPG for these V6's. So factoring in the fact that you speed a bit, and your tires may take up more gas than original, and the colder temp, etc. you end up losing 1.28 miles per gallon.
Man, you need to read up on how speeding kills your gas mileage, as much as 25-30 percent. 1.28/15 = 8.5% more gas. So, you car is using 8.5 percent more gas. Just speeding alone can cost you 30 percent more gas, and we haven't even started talking about the colder weather.

Also, take into account, if you do a lot of small trips, that brings down your miles per gallon.

So now, if we look at the numbers again, your vehicle is taking 8.5% more gas than the posted MPG from the website. nothing to be alarmed about.


In short, considering you speed (or may not go the posted speed limit), cold weather, high rolling resistant tires, etc, it's not surprising to your 4runner will consume more gas.

you really must not be understanding what i am saying....i used to get 17-19 mpgs between highway and normal driving..and its mostly highway and now i am down to 11-14 mpgs...when i got 17-19 i would get, to be exact..375 miles on a full tank of gas...now i am at 282 miles on a full tank....dont expect me to believe that everything you just listed above is gonna cause me to lose almost 100 miles...once again im sorry..speeding is not a big factor..i drive fast in my camaro and it gets exactly what the car is supposed to get..even when i drag race it
