Amsoil's XL 10,000 Mile Oil

I did my last change with the Amsoil XL 5w-30 oil, which says it can last for 10,000 miles between changes. I also used the matching filter (supposedly high-capacity). I have put about 6,000 miles on it so far, and it's stayed full and relatively clean. I'm starting to get nervous, though.

Has anyone used this type of oil regularly, going 10,000 between changes? Results? Is it safe to do this, or should I just break down and keep doing it at 5,000 miles as I have always done before?

I don't want to ruin my engine/vehicle, but at the same time, it'd be a waste to keep buying the stuff that is rated for 10,000 miles if I only use it for 5,000.

If I were the sort of person to be mistrusting of an oil companies' claims, an oil company that relies on multilevel marketing and pyramid schemes to sell its product is probably the last company I'd choose to do business with.

But maybe that's just me.

If you want to be sure, you can get an oil test kit, send it in for testing. Then you will know for sure. I have seen the results for oil at 10,000 mile usage, and it was fine.

I do the same thing with Mobil 1.
I generally run 8-9k with oil changes. The oil will come out dark (not black). So I imagine it's still good.

The real problem is that going that long. Most people do not check their oil so if your vehicle uses or leaks it has the possibility of running dry.

I'm close to 6500miles on this oil change in my 98 with 2385xx. Non-syn I plan on doing an oil change soon when I change my brake pads. I didn't use AmsOil but I think if it's remotely Clean and full your engine is okie. . Had good luck in my 440ex with it and my 125.

We had an ole T100 (Parts truck) we used Amsoil and filter. Never really changed it. Ran it 25k or 6 months, changed the filter added oil, and sent her on her way..


We got rid of it @ nearly 400k still running fine. Just traded it for a slightly larger truck. 2004 Tundra single cab V6.. Doing the same thing with the Tundra parts truck and it's nearly 350k and running well.

I know a lot of diesel truck guys (7.3 PSD, 5.9 Cummins) do that, those things typically take 12-16qts of oil and the filters old about 3qts IIRC from my 7.3, just throw a new filter and top it off every 10k. I never did it myself, but modern oil is pretty stout.

Still, I think your example says more about the toughness of the 3.4 engine than the oil, IMO.

Get the free test "kit"(really just a container and an envelope) from Blackstone or another used oil analysis place. I've had them test mine a few times just out of pure curiosity. Blackstone seems to send you their results about a week after you mail in your sample. Then you'll know.

Oil companies make money from selling oil so if they are saying you don't have to change it for twice normal I'd go with it

So tell us why you bought the 10K mile stuff when you're freaking out at 6K miles used? Keep calm, have a smoke and a beer. Let it roll for another 4K miles then change it.

New to the forum but Ive been using AMSOIL for years now. I use the 20k/ 1 year change while changing the oil filter at 10k. The oil still looks clean after 20k miles.

Personally I see no particular good reason to use anything other than their best oil as for 6 qts its only about a $15 total difference in price.
Unless I am going on a long trip I rarely if ever drive more than 5000 miles per year.
So I just change it once a year with less than 6000 miles on it.
My piece of mind is well worth $15.

Last year I did a long trip and put just over 8000 miles in 30 days and changed oil when I got back, oil still looked good and I doubt I burned more than a tablespoon, could have easily gone far longer because it was all highway miles.

Just make sure you use their 15,000 mile filters as that is really the key to running ANY oil for more than 5000 miles is a really good high volume filter.
If your filter clogs up it goes into bypass and you basically get zero filtering.

While I do not like their marketing method I have used Amsoil almost exclusively since 1977.
