Motor knock question.

2001 SR5 225k miles. Had oil changed last week. Usually use Valvoline 5w30 blend. This time went w/ Valvoline 5w30 Max for vehicles over 75k. After a few days I now have engine knock. Consistent w/ rpm. Sounds like hardware part, not combustion related. Can’t imagine it’s from the different oil. No Codes, runs just fine otherwise. Before I take it to a shop, any ideas from you guys?

I mean, I would start by checking the oil level... maybe the drain plug or oil filter was left loose. Crossing fingers it is something external to the motor that is loose.

Any internal knocking from oil issues is a MAJOR concern...

Oil pressure maybe, or you didn't tighten up a filter or a drain plug. The particular brand/offering of oil won't make a difference as long as it's the intended oil.

Take a sample of the oil and see if it has contaminates. Or send the oil to a lab to see if it has high levels of bearing material

Cut open the oil filter.

Get a mechanic's stethoscope for around $10 at your local auto parts store or use a long screwdriver or even a stick/broom handle and use it as a stethoscope and check all external components to rule them out, to use a stick push one end against an area and cup your hand over it and against your ear.

Just be careful of moving parts!!

I guess I’ll start by redoing the oil change and look for metal debri. If that doesn’t do it go to stethoscope and try to locate. Keep you posted on the results. Thanks for the info.

Change the oil. That didn’t help. Noise coming from left front cylinder. Ended up being a loose spark plug. Really loose! Wobble loose. Tightened it up. No more knock. Dodged a big bullet! Thanks to all for advice.
