animal in my air filter

Today my a/c fan was making a noise and crap was blowing out of the vents. Opened up the cabin air filter and found this:

Something ate the tray and crammed the box full of grass. they must have worked fast because the car had only sat for 24 hours.

I have a new tray coming in a few days. I'm going to try to attach a screen or chicken wire to both sides of that tray so it won't get eaten again.

What in the hell. That's scary.
 
This has been reported , usually mice, start looking elsewhere before they get into wiring !!! Do a search you'll see !
 
This issue has been discussed many times before. The problem is the fresh air intake, located under the wiper cowl on the passenger side. It is not shielded against entry by rodents. To solve this problem permanently, you need to remove cowl and fabricate a screen cover to keep them critters out of inside the vehicle. I used 1/4" square metal screening to cap mine years ago, and haven't had a problem since. I call it my "anti-chipmunk" mod. :biggrin2:

And, from the look of those pics, that critter has been in there a while.......
 
I know this might seem cheesy but if you have to park a car for a length of time you can block the cowl vents with these. They are cheap at Home Depot:

My '08 had a shop rag, among other undiscernible crap in the cabin filter. Ugh.

I think I might try this. I don't want to deal with this again. Thanks.
 
I had a similar issue with some sort of creature making their home in this area. Went to change the cabin air filter and there was all sorts of nesting material in there.

The advice that I got from my Toyota mechanic to help prevent this is when you are parked and about to turn off the engine, be sure to have your "recirculate air" button engaged (instead of "fresh air" coming in from the outside). This will close off an entry point for your mouse or other critters from climbing in.
 
My son was working on a Caddy that hadn't been driven in several months last Friday evening. When he opened the hood he found a nest with 5 baby squirrels in it.

That might work, but I would want to check the layout of that door to see exactly where it closes. Also, if a critter does happen to get to the door and settles in, and you start the vehicle it may get in when the door opens. I much prefer blocking entrance at the beginning and not having to remember to set the HVAC every time I exit the vehicle.

Out for a drive today, and I stop to check out a house for sale. I cut the engine and hear some scurrying in the dash.

First I looked in the engine compartment, and saw nothing.

I pulled out the glove box, and attempted to remove the cabin air cleaner when I small furry tail came out. I yanked the filter out, and my "new" tray was trashed (see post #1)

so long story kind of short, after pulling up the big piece of plastic under the windshield, and pulling two wheel well fasteners on each side, I removed 4 juvenile red squirrels. I think I was able to get them all.

So, I'm definitely going to do something in the way of a screen to keep these buggers out in the future.

Mice love to make nests in the valley of the 2UZ V8 underneath the intake manifold. It is hollow there right above the starter. Nice and warm too...
