Annoying Claw Marks

I have 2 medium sized dogs that go on rides about every single day in the 4runner. They are typical dog that like sticking there heads out the windows. Only problem is every time their nails are the tiniest big long, it puts holes right in the soft leather under the window. Right now I have a few layers of Gorilla Tape/Duct Tape that somewhat matches the leather, it looks terrible though and have to change it out every few months. Any ideas on a fix for it?

Put the dogs in the rear hatch area and roll the rear window down?

Thanks for the input. I guess I wasn't clear I got a barrier but are there any ways to fix the holes in the leather under the window, besides re
upholstery?
