Annoying clicking/blinking when touching brakes.

Intermittently I get this problem. It seems to be related to the lock buttons inside. What happens is when I touch the brakes, I get this clicking and blinking for 30 seconds, then it stops until the next time I touch the brakes.

If my headlights are on, nothing flashes but it still clicks. It's not the blinker click, and seems to come from near my feet, which is where the remote start was installed. If I hit the lock button inside, it stops until the next time I touch the brakes. Very annoying!

I have an appointment with the dealer tomorrow. It's a 2016 SR5 Premium, about 6000 miles on it.

Wow, when did it start doing this? any aftermarket electrical work?

It started about a month ago. I bought the car on 9/1 and the dealer installed remote start the day after I got it. I'm not 100% sure that's where the problem is of course, just a theory!

The dealer installed it, and according to them it is included in my extended warranty since they installed it. I'm glad it wasn't doing this on my 4 hour drives last weekend!

The remote start is still installed. I guess I should have said where it IS installed instead of WAS. ;-)

It's the first place I'd suspect for the problems you describe.

Dealer installed it

Installed 9/2

Problems started a few weeks ago.

I hope it's just the remote start and a quick fix!

I will for sure, and I can recreate the problem for them too!

Yes, it drives me batty for sure!! Luckily it doesn't do it ALL the time, it'll go a week or two and be fine, then CLICK CLICK CLICK FLASH FLASH FLASH!:ybrick:
 
Wow! That is pretty bad!

It sounds to me like the clicking is coming from the relay that is getting the signal to turn the dash lights on and off as if going into headlight on mode and then back off. I would definitely suspect the remote start. Problem is it could be unrelated where the installer accidentally nicked or pulled some other wire trying to get underneath to install the remote-starter.

Good luck! Keep us posted. I am about to install the anytime backup dongle and AOB switch myself and am worried about causing something similar if I do it wrong.

Be sure to come back here and update the post so we know what the outcome was. I've not seen this here on another 4Runner so makes me think it's an issue related to the remote start.
 
Same thing used to happen to me on my 4Runner after getting an aftermarket remote starter installed by the dealer. It would only happen after i had used the remote start. After entering the vehicle my 4Runner would turn off and if I immediately turned it on i would get the issue. I noticed that if I would cycle from off to acc (without turning the vehicle on) and then back to off and a start the vehicle i would not get this issue. I would also have this issue with my previous car (Lexus GS350) and the same procedure avoided it. Hope this works for you.

Thanks for your response, I'm somewhat relieved to hear someone else had a similar issue! I have only used my remote start once since this started. It seems to be triggered from using the lock/unlock buttons inside the car, although last night I didn't use them and it reappeared. Usually if I turn the car off and restart it it will go away, but not always!
 
The dealer couldn't find anything wrong with the Toyota parts of the car, and they have to have the company that installed the remote start check that. Apparently a 3rd party installed it, even though it was done through the dealer.

They do believe that the problem is with the remote start unit itself. I'm scheduled to have that looked at on Tuesday.

At least I know my car isn't going mental. ;-)

I also realized yesterday that if my headlights aren't on and this thing is clicking and flashing inside, that my front and rear lights are flashing too!

That's pretty sketchy. Hopefully they figure it out soon. In my experience working at service departments in dealerships, some after market remote starts can cause issues communicating with various electronics and on board computers. Yes the clicking is annoying for now but hopefully it doesn't escalate to the point it immobilizes the vehicle and strands you somewhere! I've Seen that before, Not on Toyota, but still a crappy situation. Good luck to you!

I agree and those are my thoughts exactly! Hopefully it can be fixed on Tuesday.
 
Car is fixed, it was a "wiring issue" with the remote start, something the installers were familiar with. It appears to be okay now, for now.
