Daaaaammn!! I'm glad it was a 5th Gen and not a 4th Gen V8. THAT would have been a true death. Probably a life saver she was driving an SUV and not a car.

She hit a wall. The extra mass of an SUV doesn't matter in this case. It looks like it's a small overlap, which the 4runners don't do well with yet. A small car that has a good IIHS small overlap rating may have been better. Also, it looks like if there was a front passenger they may have fared worse than the driver.

Check out the IIHS videos. A volvo, for example, basically just deflects off a wall.

You can see in the pic that the first solid thing the wall made contact with was probably the tire... which apparently went bye-bye. The front bumper (aluminum under the plastic) was never even engaged. See yellow circle in picture.

I'd love to see this pic with an ARB or Shrockworks front bumper. I know they look "tough" but that doesn't mean they are necessarily going to help in all accidents... but in this type of accident, I do not see how they would not be beneficial. The true brunt of the impact would occur so much further away from the cabin of the vehicle and it seems the impact would be spread to BOTH side of the frame. In the pic, it looks like nothing but the body took the impact, except maybe at the front left body mount, there may have been some contact with the frame. Just thinking out loud...

Well...........I went to get the 4runner while she was inside, pulled up went inside to get her, I knew she was drunk, that's why I was driving, but then found out she did some drugs, and we got into a fight about them, she stormed out, I grabbed her stuff went outside and she was gone with (her) 4runner... Found out the next day that she went to another bar looking for me, and some of her friends took the keys from her, not realizing that my keys where still in the 4runner she took off again and that was when she slammed into at 45 degree, 3ft thick flood wall( no damage to the wall). and some how came up clean on the toxicology, I'm thinking they messed the test report up.. lucky her...

This is an example of what happens at 60 mph, there are hardly any studies done at this speed because any bumper will be crushed unless your hitting a movable object. that's when an upgraded bumper may save your life.... I designed mine (in the background) to take down a deer or elk and still limp home...
