Confirmed: 2015 Is The Last Year Of The Nissan Xterra

We should be happy for the redesigns, ladies and gentlemen, as it means that Toyota still has plans for the T4R. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the XTerra, which is truly a sad thing.

My wife had an 01 xterra that she got in 08 with a 120k miles on it. We sold it three months ago with 220k miles on it and the only thing that ever broke on it was the thermistor control for the AC. Little $20 part. I could get about 18mpg on the highway with it. Only a 2wd v6. Fun and easy to drive. Never burned oil. Sold it to buy my 4runner. Hopefully the runner will be just as good a car as the X was.

This is unfortunate... a sign of the times. The 4Runner as sits currently is certainly not going to last too much longer either.

Fingers crossed that it is replaced by, or morphs into, something just as rugged and versatile whatever happens... Sooner rather than later, actual legally defined "trucks" may be the only ultra high mileage exempt vehicles around. The 4Runner COULD go back to basics if that were the case Since the rumor is that the first gen was invented based on similar circumstances... Hopefully this means that the 4Runner stays around as it is the only one left in this segment. I think the 4Runner has always outsold the Xterra and Pathfinder and beats out the other competitors in reliability. Maybe the 4Runner can scoop up those buyers, boost sales and buy another generation or two for itself.

When I started my search for a new SUV (that led to my 4R), the Pathfinder was on the list of potential candidates - until I discovered they had turned it into a mini-van! :nono:

I think you're backwards there. Some 4Runners were delivered to dealers with no back seats so they could classified as trucks instead of passenger vehicles in order to avoid import taxes.

I gotta be honest, I would love it if the 4Runner returned to a no-frills truck in disguise, but it won't happen. SUVs were the coming thing, and that's what dictated the modification of the mini-truck to the 4Runner. But the age of the SUV is over now, and crossovers are the rage, and Toyota is going to do what makes them the most money in the long run.

It was on my list a yr ago when i was researching

along with the rnnr, the gx470, and the pathfinder (until i read all about the transmission failures). Its a shame to see it go...

with it, the FJ, both going, the others turning into limp noodles, it almost forces you to choose a jeep or rnnr...and to choose a rnnr, youve got to do some research to know about it. ive even seen over on an FJ forum, a few saying they thought the rnnr was a unibody.

If you want something thats built for dirt...that's it, that's the list

My 2002 Xterra was the best car I ever had. I flogged it mercilessly. Only 2wd, but with a good posi rear I had an awful lot of fun in it. It was (still is) built like a brick $h!thouse.

It is sad. Maybe there will be a retro re-make like the FJ here in a few years. I liked the Xterra and the FJ and considered both of them when looking for the Runner.

I took a test drive in one when they first hit the market in 2000, I liked it overall but was disappointed in what I felt was some cheap assembly/quality issues. Namely, the passenger door panel rattled, the rear door panel actually fell off when I lifted the hatch, and the manual driver's seat was hell to adjust. Plus the salesman kept trying to convince me that I did not want a 4x4. Like WTH man I asked you for a 4x4, don't tell me what I want. Left a bad taste in my mouth, and other than liking them from afar I never considered one again. However knowing the Body-on-Frame market segment is dying, I hate to see it go. I will never sell my wife's TJ because the JK's are "impure" Jeeps, and considering there may not be anything to replace it with I may never sell my T4R, either.

Well, that's news! Here is the 2000 that I purchased that same year and racked 160k miles on the clock before selling. Certainly not the best vehicle I have owned but it did hold up well off road:
