Another Exhaust Question

I know there are tons of exhaust threads already, but I didn't really see any that answered my questions.
So here goes....
I have an '05 V8 that I'm thinking of replacing the stock muffler with a Magnaflow. I don't want something that's going to be loud, just something that tells me that I have a V8. Not really interested in a full cat-back either.
Here are the options that I see:
1 - replace stock muffler with Magnaflow
2 - replace stock muffler with Magnaflow and cut off resonator and
turn out tail pipe to exit behind rear wheel
3 - leave on stock muffler and cut off resonator and turn out tail
pipe to exit behind rear wheel

Comments?

Not really sure what #3 would get me.
In a lot of the threads that I read, it seems to be pretty popular to cut off the resonator. What is the purpose for having the resonator on there to begin with? What does it do?

1) choice one will get you the more throaty exhuast sound without replacing your entire exhaust system, just the muffler

2) this will be a little louder as you are cutting off the resonator. the resonator helps in silencing the exhaust noise. it will also (IMO) look nicer turning the exhaust out to the side as well as aid in climbing hills since you won't be dragging the exhaust.

3) See last part of number 2

I don't know why Toyota changed to a rear exiting exhaust in the 4th gens, I thought in the previous generations they exited on the side? I personally like that look better.

I also think the exhaust looks better exiting out the side. I definitely think exiting the rear becomes a liability while off-roading.
Do you know if just cutting off the resonator will make the stock muffler louder.
Will cutting off the resonator give me the dreaded highway drone with either the stock muffler or Magnaflow?

Have you guys changed both the muffler and cut off the resonator? Are you having any issues with the drone at highway speeds?

Anybody leave the stock muffler and just take off the resonator?
What was the result?

I have the stock muffler with the resonator cut off and stainless tip turned out the side (V8). Other than improving the look, sound increased slightly (I mean slightly!). It is just enough to hear it now but no drone. One other advantage (only a slight advantage) of doing this is less fumes when the rear window is down.
I looked into the magnaflow option but did not want the "highway drone", which everyone seems to get. I called magnaflow and they even recommended that I NOT buy one if I did not want the drone. They said it is hard to eliminate in an SUV because there is so much interior room for the sound to resonate. They even guaranteed that I would have the drone when towing.
 
Thanks HuntRunner, although that's not exactly what I wanted to hear concerning the drone.
I'm wondering if they were talking about the cat-back system, because I know they have different lengths of mufflers with the longer ones being more quiet. Seems like the cat-back systems come with the shorter mufflers.
 
They were talking about the same muffler that is recommended in their catback for the 4Runner (I think it is one of their largest).
If you find one that works good, I would love to know about it. From what you described, we are looking for the same result.....Please keep us posted?

I went with Option 2. I like the sound, and there is a slight hum on the freeway.

Do you know what model# muffler you put on? Or what size it is?
So the hum is not annoying?

I know you said slightly, but is it possible to get a sound clip? Also, roughly how much did you pay to have it done, if you don't mind me asking? I just want to know what price range I would be looking at and to make sure I don't get ripped off..

I dont think its annoying. I try to get a video tonight with camera. I am not sure what the part number is, but i check when i get home.

I paid 160.00 for everything at a local shop.

the videos i took have no sound. My 3 year old digitial camera is slowly dying. The only thing you hear is a fizz sound. Sorry man.
