Another "is this a good deal" question

Happy Easter!!!

I've been looking at 4 runners for about a month, was going to get an H3 but decided on the Toyota instead. I've been e-mailing and visiting about 7 different dealers. I love looking at new cars but hate to purchase, the endless dealer games.

Anyway I found a dealer that is offering a 4 Runner Limited, sticker price $40,432, he is asking $35,500 which includes $1,500 cash back from Toyota. This is the best deal so far. How does it compare to your price?

Thanks

The deal is about $1000 over what Edmunds/KBB say is invoice, before the $1500 rebate. The dealer would argue it's closer than that, because they love to add an "advertising fee" of around $500 to the invoice price. Most cars are selling right around invoice right now, especially SUV's, before rebates/incentives are applied.

If you wanted to drive a hard bargain, you could probably squeeze another $500 or so out of that deal. On the other hand, if this is the best offer among 7 dealers, it's probably a great deal for your local area. Cars may be moving a bit better in your area compared to the national average. If you're happy with the price and it's the truck you want (color, options, etc.), then go for it.

Here's a big thread about "How much did you pay" with people's results:

Sounds like you've done the research. Really the only way to get a few more bucks off is to go back and forth between two dealers to get the final best offer.

That said, if you like this dealer and location and they have the color and features you want right on the lot, you may want to grab it and start enjoying. It dosn't look like a horrible deal and it's a great truck.....

Thanks for the links and info, according the pricing in the other thread there is still some room for negotiations. I have not countered any of the offers so far, just getting quotes, but in the big picture a couple of hundred dollars is no big deal if the dealership is honest.

I have only 2 dealer local and one wants sticker price +, (they actually added a dealer sticker about $2K over the Toyota sticker) the other won't quote me a price, he wants me to make an offer, I won't play these games so they are out. Seems the new buzz phrase is "I want to earn your business" although they don't price or act as such. Nothing against dealers, it must be a hard business.

The other 5 dealers are 80 miles East of me and 125 miles West of me, although this is no big deal the last 2 cars I have purchased have been a 2 hour drive. These are larger cities with competition down the block.

The popularity of green/hybrid vehicles shows that larger SUV sales are slumping, I looked up the Toyota sales data for the 1st quarter and sales are down about 17% over last year.

Thanks Again
Frank

A great deal would be $35,119....which based on percentages, is what I paid for my new 4Runner. That figure is still around $1500 above what he paid for it (actual invoice).

You made the right decision to stay away from the H3. It's been like rated the WORST vehicle out there in reliability!!! Most people that buy them have no clue...the just "want it". I'd rather have functionality and reliability than try to follow the crowd that say "that's cool". Besides the 4Runner is sweet looking to me and thing that are a waste of money suddenly become very ugly!

my take and 2

What is the Carsdirect.com price for your area?

My special order '06 stickered at $41,586, I paid $37,492 before TTL (tax, title and license) and rebates. OTD (out the door) price may or may not help you because of different sales tax rates and state registration fees.

So IMO, it looks like a pretty good deal with a little bit of wiggle room left.

My dealer and sales rep was straight forward. He offered me a price for exactly what I wanted, said he was confident that I was getting the best price and if I didn't, he'll offer to match it, if not beat it. No games, no haggling. I remember in late '05 one dealer said, I can do sticker price OTD on a 2005 and sticker plus TTL for a 2006. In my mind, I was thinking dream on buddy, this is a 4Runner not a RX400h.

Yeah, a little different here in Jersey..... I have 6 Toyota dealers within 10 miles of either my home or office.
