another lift question....

hey there,
got a 2001 sport ed, 265/75/16 tires, don't go off road, no towing, but just for a higher look, a "massive" look, i would like a lift - not more than 3 inch (still wanna make it in underground mall parking lots). what would you recommend? something that i will not be sorry afterwards, not affect my car driving abilities, nor the mechanical aptitudes.

you'll probably be able to fit in most parking structures with a 3" lift but you won't get that "massive" look unless you go higher. i would suggest you ask around and physically look for other lifted 4runners in your area and see if their lift kit (height and looks) is to your liking. gl.

thank you. when i said 'massive' i was just joking. i'm just looking for something a little higher, that would not make my tires look small.

That's a hard thing to do. Get a 3" lift and still make your tires look decent.

If I were you I would probably get a 3" lift and bigger tires or like a 1-2" lift and keep the same tires.

I installed the 2.5 - 3" Daystar lift and run 305-70/16 MTZ's on 16 x 10 wheels.

Did just a little trimming to accommodate them, but it goes where I need it to (mild 'wheeling). My parking garage at work is 6'-8" and I fit okay. I think the overall height is now 6'-6" (with stock roof racks installed)

Stick with those tires and go with a 2.5" lift and you'll be fine for the street.
Plus I think you'll get close to 3" with any kit that claims 2.5" since you have the shorter coils in your '01.

uluafishing, that would be 2 much for my buget (lift AND tires), plus I prefer not to 'adjust ' anything else to fit the larger tires, but thank you. yours looks nice indeed.

so, when you guys say 'lift', what do you have in mind? what options would you recommend? body, tire, spacers? sorry, i am not mechanically inclined, and i would not know the difference, advantages / disadvantages one over another.

i want to get a lift on my 97 sr5 and put 33x11.50 or 12.50 bfgs on there... will this lift include everything that i need?? thanks in advance for any info

I have the 3" OME lift from Toytec ( I think I actually only gained about 2.5" after it settled) and I still have the 265/70s. Now I would love to have bigger tires and hope to soon, but in the mean time it doesn't look ridiculous in my opinion. I used to hate when people lifted their truck and kept the stock size tires, but on the 4Runner with only a 3" it really doesn't look terrible.

I think you will be fine to get a 2.5" lift, especially with the taller 265/75s.

I can only speak for the Daystar lift (installed them on 1 Sequoia, 1 Tundra, 4 4Runners to date), and so far so good (knock on wood).

The Daystar lift should come with new bumpstops, shock boots, spacers, and longer front strut bolts...basically everything you need. I would spring for new shocks/struts, swaybar bushings, and CV boots since you'll have everything disassembled anyway.

I have a DIY with pics on installing the Daystar kit on my '97 4Runner somewhere in this forum. It's actually really easy once you know the tricks.

Oh yeah...spring for a front-end alignment after installing the kit. The lift will cause positive camber which in turn will cause premature wear on the outside edge of your front tires. (I waited 2 months and the outer edge was almost bald...I was planning on changing rims/tires anyway so NBD.)
