Another Lighting Question(s) (HID/Projector/Halogen Related)

I've been using the search function a lot recently researching the subject about the possibilty of upgrading to HID's for my 04 4 runner sport. I've come up with the following and would appreciate commentary and feedback:

1. If you have a 03-05 model (non-projector) you can purchase an HID kit (most have gone with the xenon depot 4300 kit), however, since the housing was built for halogen bulbs, there is an issue with having a lot of glare? Has anyone just disregarded this and installed the kit anyway. Additionally, others have opted to go with some sort of retro-fit where they put TSX, s2000 componenets within the housing but this requires actually opening up the headlight housing (something I'm really not interested in doing).
2. A lot of people with 03-05 have simply upgraded to 06+ headlights and put in an HID kit which is pretty straight forward. Problem is that you need to buy new headlights if you have an 03-05 in order to accomplish this on top of having to buy the HID kit. Seems to me this is the pricey (but safe) way of going. Assume you'd still need to do the squirrel finder adjustment as well if you went HID on a projector?
3. 06+ projectors come in 2 styles (black housing for sport & regular housing for non-sport)? They can be had on Partznet for around $200 per headlight or eBay claims to have some OEM ones floating around for relativley cheap (but most are missing tabs)?
4. 06+ projectors drop right in and plug right up with exception of having to buy some sort of part that installs just below the headlight housing?

Appreciate any feedback or pictures. I currently have silverstars for lowbeams and hella optilux XY for the fogs. I'm on the fence about upgrading the lowbeams and don't think the juice is worth the squeeze for the foglights but might be tempted to change those as well.

1. yes, expect a lot of glare. i have done this on my 05 limited, both on low beams and fogs (6000k)... they both use the 9006 bulb

3. The broken tab headlights on eBay are usually from wrecked cars. The lenses could be scratched.

4. It lines up, but there's a small triangular gap left by the grille area, as the 2006+ grille is different. In addition to the trim piece below the headlight, you will also need the wiring harness from Toyota if retaining halogen bulbs. 2006+ uses H11 bulbs, whereas the 2003-05 are 9006. If you're ordering the kit from XenonDepot, tell Steve you want a H11 HID kit for the projector housing, but want a 9006 wiring harness.

wrong... you don't need a 9006 wiring harness..the h11 bulb will come with the correct wiring harness needed.. :lol:

Thanks for the feedback guys. Man that is a lot fo glare. When all is said and done I bet the lighting upgrade for just the low beams will run damn near over $500. The projector look is so much damn cleaner though. While I understand why Toyota made this changes starting with 06, I hate them for having done so.

sure.. when you buy an hid kit you will get (a) an igniter and (b) bulb.. the bulb is attached to the "headlight connector".. the h11 has a different headlight connector which will not fit on the 05 and below.. so when you mentioned getting a "h11 but wanting a 9006 harness to go with it", that is wrong info.. the h11 will always come with the headlight connector for the 06++ (correct harness for the correct headlight).. his only option is to replace the hid connector on the hid or replace his headlight socket on his 4runner...

If you ask us to swap out the H11 harness for a 9006 harness we can do this for you. You do need to let us know though otherwise the kit will ship with an H11 harness.

aahh.. so this is what uneek meant by asking for a "h11 but with a 9006 harness".. you guys modify it yourself (he forgot to mention that).. i think your'e the only ones who do this.. good to know..

Sorry, it's the wiring harness. Not the bulb base. The HID capsule connectors to the ignitor and ballast are industry standard AMP connectors.

So for the OP, if you do the headlight swap to '06 projectors, you want a H11 HID kit, but 9006 wiring harness.

No, we're not modifying anything physically other than requesting a 9006 wiring harness on an H11 kit. As Steve said, they provide a matching wiring harness with the kit ordered. H11 harness on H11 kit, 9006 harness on 9006 kit, and so on. But if HID kit, you're using doesn't have a wiring harness (for hook up to the battery with relay(s) and fuse(s)), then it wouldn't be an issue since you're taking your OEM halogen bulb plug socket and connecting it directly to the ballast. I'm using the wiring harness on with all my HIDs.

The wiring harness which is relayed and fused to protect the OEM wiring that XenonDepot provides mates with OEM headlight socket connector (9006 in 2003-05, H11 in 2006-09), the other end is the same that's connected to the ballast. The only difference between a 9006 kit and an H11 kit is the HID capsules are rebased for 9006 or H11, and the matching connector on the wiring harness that gets plugged into the OEM headlight socket connector to activate the relays and power the HIDs.

So am I to understand that if I buy a set of 06+ projector headlights, and I buy the h11 HID kit with the 9006 harness, everything will be plug and play in my '04 SR5?

How about the parking/DRL/signals on the 06+ headlight? Will those plug and play also? I am going to be getting and ARB bumper soon with the fogs that come with it, so I wont need the lights down below anymore. I'm just curious how the ARB signals and fogs will integrate with the 06+ headlights and whether this is gonna be worth it or not.

I kept my DRL's/turn signals in the bottom. I didn't want to bother with moving the wiring up and I prefer the DRL's on the bottom anyway. I just put in a light socket where the DRL's are on the 06 headlight and left it unwired. I'm pretty sure other members have wired their turn signal on the new headlight, there's a thread around here somewhere.
