Another opinion thread, 2wd vs. 4x4

So you 4runner Buffs are FULL of great ideas,comments, and opinions. So here is another one for you. I purchased 4wd because I am lazy and do not like to chain up for the snow, plus it makes more veratility of my vehicle. So what is your reasoning?? Pros and cons?????

from my understanding you can do a much cleaner Straight Axle Swap on a 2wd than you can on a 4wd, regardless the sas is a pretty serious project to get into so it prolly doesn't apply here, so everything I said was pointless... good talk
 
4wd is just a cool thing to have in my opinion, you can go more places, and its something you can use if your board. i'm much happier with my 4wd than i was with my 2wd.

Bought 2wd the first time. It went plenty of places, but I want to be able to go everywhere. Got the 4th gen 4x4 just to find that the 4wd sucks. It does fine on the road in snow but the 3rd gen was just as capable for mild offroading.
 
i got a 2wd cause its the only kinds i could find for sale. and my dad said its cheaper to get stuff fixed or has less stuff to break. and i didnt need for 4wd, which is probably true because i know i would have ragged mine out by now if i did.

Yep, pretty much same story for me. Looking back, I do wish I had the 4WD but there's nothing I can do about that now and I've been happy with my 2WD thus far. I just didn't really think I would be getting that much into modding my runner when I bought it or that I would really ever take it off-road. And now I do wish I had that option but it's not the end of the world.
 
I bought a 2 wheeler because I live in S. Cal and I did not figure on jumping any curbs with it. Besides I already had a 4 wheel truck and did not need it in the 4 runner. I do like the room in the 4 runner when the back seat is folded down, and is purfect for hauling things.
 
4WD because I wanted to be able to get around in the winter / get up my driveway... although I haven't really needed it this winter. :mad: Where's the snow???
 
The 4Runner was available 4WD in most areas, why would you NOT get a 4x4?:)

You would be limited if you wanted to go places, plus with the winters in Calgary it would be foolish to get a 2WD 4Runner.

On some vehicles this is true, I have always assumed it was the lower weight and perhaps lower COG leading to the slightly higher figure. With 3rd gens I have never seen any ratings other than 3500 for the 2.7 and 5000 for the 3.4, regardless of 2wd or 4wd.

Personally I got the 4wd because I use it. In the winter it snows quite a bit here in MA and in other seasons I like to explore the back country a bit. Aslo 4wd will hold its value better as most buyers where I am are looking for 4wd SUV's. The market for a 2wd SUV in New England is very small.
 
I live where it snows,I like off roading and resale value is higher with 4wd.
I won't own a 2wd truck since I don't see the point.

2wd is just a glorified station wagon.

cept when gas is like 4 dollars lol. and i didnt pay for my truck so i can't complain about it being 2WD. besides like i would really need it with all the snow i get down here in alabama

Since your posting in the 3rd generation section, I should point out the rear end is a bit different on the 2 and 4WD. 3.7 on the 2WD and 3.9 on the 4WD. Which means @ 2,000 RPM you would be going 60 on the 4WD or 67 on the 2WD.

One reason I point that out, is because the 4th gen. does not have a difference between the two models.

I do find in the 3rd gen. 2WD, it tends to shift to third on a hill, especially if you have the cruise control on. I find myself turning off the cruise control on hills. Not sure if you have that same problem on the 4WD 3rd gen. models?

People chose what they think they need. I would think most members have the 4WD. I know here in Atlanta, it is hard to find a 4WD, but if your in Maine, the chances are that they never heard of a 2WD 4Runners.:p
