another price question

Hi all,
Looking at a 1999 Toyota 4Runner Sport with a sunroof, 108k miles, green, automatic, 2 owners with a clean caxfax. All looks good, great condition body, clean, etc. Seems these 4Runners here in Denver come at a premium, especially with the lower miles like this. Should I expect to pay over KBB or Edmunds for something like this or are those still a good pricing example even in this area? Anyone from Colorado have some insight? Can anyone throw out what they feel would be a fair price? Thanks all.

4wd or 2wd? E-locker? With those low miles would expect to see it in the 9-12 range. Would really look to get it closer to the 9k mark though.

It all depends on a number of factors. Ultimately, if you feel satisfied with the product for the price you paid, then that's all that matters. I'm a stickler with my money....

I snagged a '98 3.4l 4runner SR5 with 115,000mi for $6200 last november. It has a 5spd manual tranny (key), leather(don't care), and all the service records. No elocker, but I plan to retrofit later down the road anyway.

Other people have managed to get much better deals than I have and I feel like I did okay. You are correct to say that Colorado 4R's demand a premium over KBB/Edmunds/NADA.

Patience is key!

From my experience (just having gone thru a 3+ ordeal to find mine) I'd say that's right on the money. Of course cheaper is better, but if it's really, really clean then you're doing ok.

As for the truck you linked to in Vail, I've seen it twice and drove it once (first time it was raining like you wouldn't believe). Mechanically I'd say it is very good. The interior is in good shape as well and don't even get me started on the 5-spd (that's a GOOD thing for those that don't know me).

However, the exterior of the truck is suffering. What the ad DOESN'T tell you is that the hood and roof are covered dozens (maybe even 100+) hail strikes. Seriously, it's just beat to hell and was something I wouldn't even consider buying 'cuz it would drive me nuts. You might be "OK" with it tho, so who is to say?

Also, he does claim that it has a TRD clutch (no documentation). However, driving that thing was a PITA. I had to depress the clutch with enough force to literally lift me out of the driver's seat and nearly couldn't get it started without the Clutch Bypass Button.

That explains why it hasn't sold yet. I've seen it posted on CL for at least 2 months, and I've always wondered why it didn't sell quickly. Considering the price and the features, you would think it would have sold in less than a week

Aw, come on guys, that is how you know the car is from CO. First owner probably bought it at a hail sale. You could probably get a replacement hood for the difference in price (esp with the CO demand and the lift, etc.), and the roof, well, you don't see the roof that much. You will look super native.

I can't say much about the clutch though. Could be an opportunity to negotiate, especially if it has been on CL for 2 months. I would assume he knows what is wrong with the clutch, or perhaps that could be a negotiation point, getting it checked out. The cost of a mechanic inspection should be small compared to the price of the vehicle; and that is a great deal.

The info he provided to me was that the previous owner suffered the damage and opted not to have it repaired. The current owner stated he simply wasn't bothered by the damage and something to the effect of, "If you live in the mountains, then it is only a matter of time before your car suffers from hail." Ok, that's possibly true, but that doesn't mean I have to like/accept it; hence, no purchase.

As for the clutch, I don't know what to say; it was just damn stiff. IMHO, using it as a daily driver would be brutal. Also, the fact that you pretty much had to try and drive your foot through the floorboard/firewall to get it started just didn't sit well with me. He stated that no adjustment could be performed and that you simply had to live with it. Not being a mechanic myself, I don't know if the 4Runner clutch is non-adjustable, but that doesn't sound right.

Truly, the rest of the truck was in great shape. The wheels looked good from 10', but closer inspection made them somewhat off-putting (quality of paint job). Black wheels look sweet on a white truck, just depends on how finicky you are about the process/results of those particular wheels.

In short, that truck for $6K? Sold. Same truck for $8K? No thanks.
