Another run away Toyota (Prius)

Saw that on the news......so, the idiot had the time to call 911, but not turn off the car until they told him to?!?!? I think people are getting dumber as time progresses...
 
The guy's story smells of manure, from ABCNews:
He's 61, and been driving for decades.
The incident spanned more than 20 miles.
He claims he reached down and pull the accelerator pedal up, but it wasn't stuck.
He claims the floor mat was not in anyway interfering with the pedal because he checked that too.
He claims to have tried repeatedly to turn off the car.
He was "standing on the brakes and looking at the CHP officer" who had pulled up beside him.

He had the presence of mind to call 911 AND do all these other things... but not put the car in "Neutral"? I'm 5'10" and there is no way in hell that I can reach down "with my right hand" and even touch a pedal, much less pull on it, while driving. Did he fold himself in half? Hell, go try it in your own car while it's parked.

Some one is full of it. :toilet:

Not to mention that all the officer did was tell him to step on the brakes and set the emergency brake (I saw him (the driver) on TV this morning). Now if the driver did all of what you mentioned, including stepping on the brake, and all the officer did was tell him to apply brakes, and the vehicle stopped, where was the problem?
 
I agree. I woke up this morning to hearing this guy talk on the news. I could smell the BS coming through the speakers. I really don't think this is a legit case. The timing of this incident.....the fact that it was with a Prius....The sad thing when big companies start taking heat is that all the crazies come out of the wood works. All the people that want attention or want something and try to get it in the lowest of ways.

I really do hope this guy gets caught being full of it...and if it is a true incident, I hope Toyota can resolve this whole mess. I love my 4runner...both my first 97 SR5 and my now 2006 4x4 v6 sport.
 
I've said it before and I'll say it again---- there will be people who are full of crap that will take advantage of this whole Toyota mess. Think about it...there are a lot of reasons someone might do that. If it looks like BS and smells like BS, well, it probably is BS.

Clarification: brakes + emergency brake + steep upgrade = stop.

Before jumping to conclusions, i would wait for the facts and stay away from being backseat drivers at this point.

Not being a backseat driver. I saw the guy (prius driver) right before I left work work. What I wrote was what he basically said in the clip. He said he tried to stand on the brakes, etc., and when the officer pulled up next to him, told him to step on the brakes and apply the handbrake...that's when he slowed and finally stopped. If there was a steep incline, on the freeway, he didn't mention it and neither did the news story.

Every toyota should come with a built in police officer voice that can "Make the brakes work" by just saying so in cases of brake malfunction.

Or at least one of those bright yellow visor stickers that reads: "Step on brake pedal to stop vehicle"

^^I like this better^^, but with this, they actually would have to "look up" and be "litirate" to read it. It might prove to be too much work...

Actually, before Toyota sells anymore vehicles, they should have a policy in place to ensure that the potential customer knows the difference between the gas and brake pedals. If they can't identify them, and what they are used for, then Toyota may refuse to sell them a vehicle.
 
That ole guy don't know how to drive. He can't downshift or put in Neutral nor just put it in Reverse or Park. Heck, he can't even turn off the engine. I bet he cannot go out 4-wheeling. LOL He shouldn't be driving.
 
I keep hearing that there was a brake smell.... So the brakes were actually being applied?? I cant image a PRIUS engine being capable of overdriving its brakes system if they were actually being fully depressed.

I can't imagine any vehicle overdriving its brakes. The infamous Car and Driver article mentioned that they tested a mega-HP tuner Mustang and they still managed to slow it down to about 10 MPH. I don't recall which tuner Mustang they used, but I know some of those new Roush Mustangs are pushing close to 600 HP.
