Another Spark Plug Thread

OK I know what your thinking (we have beaten this horse blue right?) Wrong!


Here is why:

We all know that Denso Iridium plugs are factory(also NKG) But there are 2 Denso plugs that will work for our application... I have read that the size of the center electrode can play a vital role in both the longevity and efficiency of the spark plug. A bigger center electrode requires more power, but it won't ware out as quickly. The IK20 is branded as a better (performance plug) but I will not sacrifice performance for durability especially when it comes to something as vital as spark plugs... I need some help deciding and if you are running the IK20 please let me know what you think of them?

Denso IK20 = .4 center electrode

Vs.

Denso SK20R11= .7 center electrode

For those who know more than I do on the subject:lmao:

Not sure if this helps, but I just replaced mine and I used the Denso (3297) SK20R11 Iridium long lasting plugs. My understanding is that they last longer as you said. These were what Toyota put in my V8 originally and what they recommend so they're what I used. I noticed smoother idle & more responsive acceleration and see no reason to get LESS quality.

Get the recommended BEST plugs for your Runner. Just my opinion, but based on Toyota's R&D budget and history I will trust when they say best that they mean best is in fact better.

That makes no sense what-so-ever. The size of the center electrode does NOT require more power. First off when you say POWER...you're talking about amps. Amps will be the same no matter what the size of the electrode is. Now voltage is a little different. But the amount of voltage is determined by the size of the gap.

The biggest influence of the longevity of a plug is going to be the material (copper, platinum or iridium). Iridium is a very hard metal and will last the longest.

As for performance....they'll all give the EXACT SAME PERFORMANCE for the life of the plug. You'll not see one bit of difference in the performance between copper, platinum or iridium plugs. They all perform the same.

If there was a difference you'd see NASCAR or Formula-1 cars using Platinum or Iridium plugs. Since they put in new plugs after each race they don't see a need for very long lasting plugs. And if there was even a .001% difference in performance between a copper, platinum or iridium plug they'd be using it....instead they all use a standard copper plug.

What is the reccomended change interval?

Depends on the plug you use.

Copper 30k to 40k...Platinum - up to 70k...Iridium - 95k.

But I don't recommend in keeping plugs in an Aluminum head that long. Although I hear NGK (and others) have designed their new plugs to have a coating that eliminates the problem of plugs getting stuck and stripping the threads when you remove them.
 
Thanks for all the replies, I think I will follow Calikev's recommendation and just stay with the Denso SK20R11's. They made it 105,000 and I think I can trust them to do it again!

I also agree that whatever little amount of extra resistance that comes with the thicker center electrode is in the real world irrelevant. If it sparks then its going to ignite.
