Antenna, I know what I want, but don't know anything else....

Hey folks, so, Sophie just came out of her winter nap, and I have a few bucks to throw at her this year, so I just ordered a Magnaflow Overland, stainless exhaust, and have an appointment set up with my body shop to replace rocker panel thayt has some minor perforations going on.

While it's in the shop, (since they have the tools, and more patience), I was thinking about getting the antenna dealt with.

It got a cheapo replacement installed just before I bought her, a bunch of years ago, and it failed to go up and down, a few years later. I don't use the radio that much, so no big deal.

But. as she keeps inching towards the offroad beast she really wants to be, I keep coming back to the long whip style antennas that CB's use.

I'll have the power disconnected so it doesn't grind away every time I turn the radio on.

One of them, tied down the roof rack, would look nice, and be there when I wanted the radio.

Is there one out there that uses the stock antenna mount, that also works with radio frequencies? Or do they all have a bolt on plate that I need to find a spot for?

Researching "whip antenna" pulls up so much random stuff, I don't know if I'm even looking for the right thing.

And there's so many antenna threads here, most dealing with the power ones failing, that I grow numb if I start searching through them for this info.

And if I'm just plain wrong, talk to me like I'm stupid, I can handle it. Thanks all!

Look up the "Tacoma Whip Mod" to replace the power antenna with an OEM quality fixed antenna.

If you are looking for a CB/Ham antenna, then that is a different ball of wax (and would be a separate antenna).

+1 for tacoma antenna, sounds like exactly what you want if I'm not wrong. Unless you want to use a CB in that location and run the new antenna where the old one would be? I haven't seen that done yet, but I wouldn't be shocked if it's possible. Would probably look pretty slick honestly

I did this when I got the vehicle (9 years ago), and have never regretted it. You are advised to remove it (easy) when you go through a mechanized car wash.

Easier to just not use those places, and as a side benefit you increase the life (and retain quality) of your paint. Too many people didn't learn the wisdom of the saying "Anything worth doing, is worth doing right"... and understanding that Convenient is often the opposite of Right.

But the OP still hasn't said if he's looking for an AM/FM antenna or a CB antenna... sorta sounded like he wanted Both in the same device. Looks like if you're doing minimal CB and/or shorter range (like for wheeling), this is an option:

It actually lead to my question.

Unless I'm mistaken, all the antenna installed were shorties. Like, the 24" or whatnot, flavor.

Perhaps I'm using utterly incorrect terminology? Or, they all had some lengthening ability that I didn't note?

I want it for AM/FM. No CB in the vehicle, and no immediate plans to add one.

I'd like it to use the space once occupied by the stock radio antenna too.

This is pure aesthetics, and I'll own that. I like the look, pure and simple.

If those 6' whatever ones are purely for CB, and won't function for AM/FM, my quest ends there, and I'll just have my shop disconnect the power from the one I have and call it a day.

Oh, the pups say thanks! They were SOOOO happy to have their back window again, life squished into an Outback all winter is just NOT as fun as slobering all over the outside of dads tailgate....

I have a car wash near me that's touch free, all just water spray. Not quite as good at real grime removal, but it's safe to drive through with all manner of crap attached to the vehicle, no snagging or destruction, I'm a fan!

So, you want a 6' antenna in the factory location.

Please, only a simple yes or no. Your very wordy replies are hard to understand Specifically what you want.

If yes, then you need to find out the thread pitch of the antenna mast (86300-35090) that's needed to replace the OEM electric piece on the vehicle. Chances are Very good that you can have a super tall antenna in the factory location.

All antennas pick up all frequencies... maybe not well, but they'll do it. CB specific antennas are better suited for Transmitting, but there are plenty of sources that show how to use your normal car antenna for CB use.

OP, in order to replace a power antenna with a fixed you need to remove the power mast mount and replace with a fixed mast mount, and then add any antenna you want.

OEM Tacoma antenna is 'tall' and normal looking. Not stubby. Part numbers are in the video description. I'd personally take a bit more time and care doing the work, but it was at least fun to watch!
