Any 4th Gen Owners With BFG 255's

This might be better suited for tire forum, but I figured I'd have better chance at hitting my audience in this section so I hope that's OK. I have come across a great deal on some BF Goodrich MTs, 255/75-17. These are the old style that they brought back to put on the newer Rubicon Wranglers. I'm thinking about getting these for my 4th gen SE, matched with my '06 SE 17inch rims/Daystar 2.5&1.5/wheel spacers. My concerns are these: Will the MT tread be that noticeable in my 4Runner as far as a rough ride goes? Will these 255's look silly due to their narrow width? I hear they are affectionately referred to as "pizza cutters." I have seen a few 4Runners on here that are running this similar set up and from the pictures, it doesn't look too bad. With the wheel spacers, I can hardly tell they are narrower. I checked a tire size conversion calculator and at it seems the difference between these and my stock 265/75-17s is only .4 inch difference in width and about 1.5 inches difference in height. I could hold out for some larger BFG AT's or Duratrac's but that's a lot more than I'd be spending on this set of 5 BFG MT's at $600. By the way, they have about 5K miles on them.

If you haven't seen mine, check out my build thread got pics, link in sig. I love that size. Narrower yes, but not enough to really notice unless its right beside a 265. Definitely not pizza cutters IMO. Don't know much about those tires, but definitely recommend the size.

I second what ASR said, had the 255/75 until I wore them out and then went to 255/80.

I will probably always run a 255, just love the width and not having to worry with much rubbing.

It seems like the 255 has a big following with a 3" lift. I definitely understand the reasoning.

Personally I love the 255's maintained almost stock gas mileage and they are mean. Narrower are actually better in snow and various types of terrain. Can't hardly tell they are narrower and they are awesome. I would definitely recommend it.

Check with Techmen17 on here. I believe he has a 3/2 lift with the 255/75/17 BFG MT's.

The 255/75/17 looks GREAT on 4runners. The pizza cutter tires that you are referring to would be the BFG KM2's in 235/80/17. IMO they are too slim for the looks on the 4runner. I also think there are a couple of other guys on here that run those.

I've got the 255/75 17 BFG Mud-Terrains on my 4runner and I love them. The ride is good, there is a little hum but i have dual exhaust on my 4runner so the tires are the quietest part. Definitely go for them when i wear these out i will probably go back with the same size.

Thanks everybody! Excellent information there. I just committed to them so hopefully I'll get some good mileage out if them before BFG decides to quit making them again! I'll get some pic coming too. If anybody else has experience or pics to share, I'd appreciate all I can get. Thanks to all.

Yes I use the Bfg 255/85/16 km2 Awesome is all I can say I too Love this Tire size .. Atrac works much better than w 285 less rotating lateral mass
I dont get stuck because of tire size .. I get stuck from getting hung up usually not because of grip issues.

I am running 255/70 without any suspension mods (yet). 1" taller. I love the look now, and i'm sure it will look great with a lift as well.

I just mounted up 255 80 17 KM2's on FJ Steelies for my 2004 4Runner SE this morning. They are sweet! I am a big fan over my old 285's...my power steering is much less strained now.

The thing about the BFG tires is that they run narrow for the size. The tread on their 255s is only about 7" wide. Most other 255s run 7.75 to 8.25" wide at the tread. So BFGs really are pizza cutters compared to most.

I think you'll like them. The 255/75 actually measures 31" which is the same as most 265/75-16 tires or 265/70-17 tires. There isn't a lot of difference in the sizing as far as diameter, just width. They are a little heavy at 46 lbs but that's not horrible. You'll lose some fuel economy but you may not be worried about that. They are good tires. I've seen them last a long time on Toyotas before.

I have been running the KM2's in 255/85/16 (33's) and I really like them. They are pretty tight on the pavement after initial break-in and they are great performers off-road. They are not siped at all so their traction on winter roads is not the best but not bad. They are very stable running through standing water at speed on the highway.

They are pretty noisy; I did some serious sound deadening to my vehicle so its not bothersome to me at all but I imagine they could be a bit noisy if your rig is stock.

I have ~ a 3" lift and no wheel spacers. I have no rubbing issues at all. With a 2" bump stop extension, they have not rubbed when full flexed off road.
