Any computer guys out there?

Just upgraded to 30mb internet. When i run a dl speed test through my wireless router i get around 10mbps. When I run the test with an eithernet cord hooked right into modem, i get like 28mbps. What do i need to get 30mb wifi? A new router?

Hardware-

pc- acer aspire 5734z-4725
router- netgear wgt624

Mainly it is because 802.11 WIFI is only half-duplex vs. a full-duplex LAN connection + some other reasons that you probably can't control.

BTW, 30mb internet is pretty fracking fast for most applications. That is > 3.5 MegaBytes (MB) download speed.

10 mb or ~ 1.2 MB download speed is roughly what I get over wifi as well.

so what im getting over wifi is about as good as i am going to get w/o hard wire? fastest i have gotten from test so far on wifi is 11mbps dl and 5mbps upload. the only difference i noticed when i upgraded from 15 to 30, was about 3mbps upload which i could care less about really. if i cant get more than 11mbps wifi i will go back to 15mbps and save the extra $10 a month
 
Well its just that there are three factors here:

1) The available bandwidth from your service provider (I assume cable)

2) The max sustainable average WIFI transfer speed of your wireless router & specific WIFI technology utilized by it.

3) The max sustainable average WIFI transfer speed of your PC / laptop & the specific WIFI technology utilized by it.


It will vary based on the network card technology and brand. Acer is not a network card brand, just an FYI. They are just a parts assembler like Sony, HP, Dell.

So in a basic summary to your original question: It is not possible (for all practical purposes) to achieve equal speeds over WIFI & a hard-wire CAT6 (on a home lan) connection because the WIFI communicates at half-duplex.

3. my network card is a Acer Nplify 802.11b/g/n

any suggestions to get more dl speed out of my wifi? like i said, with a LAN it was 28+mbps

They always do but imagine if everyone got these speeds and relative DL/UL speeds, the servers would be overloaded. Not that they couldn't handle it but these ISP's don't exactly intend on their customers getting the same speeds that their tests maxed out.
 
To the OP, you could upgrade your wireless access point to a wireless N device, but you would also have to ensure your devices (laptops, pc's, etc) also support wireless N to achieve the maximum available speed. However, as previously mentioned, due to the duplex nature of WIFI/CAT6 you will never realize the maximum speed via wifi. Wireless N, would, however ensure you have a faster peer-to-peer transfer speed (say to copy files and such between your devices, be it laptop, desktop, NAS, etc). If you are just trying to get the "maximum" speed your internet device (WAN) is capable off, then hardwired is the only real way to do so - and even then, your limited by other factors (mainly those which are controlled by the ISP).

Ya, just looking for the fastest internet via wifi. Dont share anything or have a home network. Cisco has a rebuilt dual band n on newegg for like $50. My brother in law says I should reset my router and see if I get faster speeds....make any sense?
 
When I moved into my house, I figured there was enough wireless stuff around, so I hard wired all the rooms to wall Cat5e jacks. when the nephews stop by they love it. almost 20 mb on the cable modem right now.
 
This is what I just tested at. I've got the 25mbps plan. I've got a Linksys E3000 that runs simultaneous dual band. When I was at my buddy's place, and he has the 50 plan, I tested over 40. You just need the right hardware.

Can you post both the numbers from hardwired connection AND WIFI ?

Just listing one connection doesn't provide much info.

You need to upgrade to an 'N' router. I'm on a 50mb plan and was not satisfied with my speeds using a Asus RTN13U router. I had it for two years but since upgrading to the 50mb plan it wasn't cutting it anymore, even though it was an 'N' type. I changed out the router to an Netgear N600 and see significantly better speeds. Wireless is well over 30, but I primarily use a CAT 5E hardwired connection with a docking station when doing business related activities.
 
Like I said before the wireless speeds will never be EQUAL to the hardwired CAT5/6 speeds coming off the same drop. This was explained above pretty well above.

Those who say "get better hardware" - well that is probably a good idea but each end must be upgraded and it will still never be equal. :hello:

All wireless is half duplex. N gives you faster speeds because it uses multiple streams. The radio still can only receive or transmit one session at a time to one client at a time.

You can't combine a 2.4 and a 5 Ghz radio for a single transmission.

The backward compatibility and speed capability of 802.11n come from its use of multiple antennas and a technology called Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO). MIMO, pronounced Mee-Moh, uses different antennas to send and receive, thus increasing throughput and accomplishing more of a full duplex operation.

MIMO comes in three types:

■ Precoding
■ Spatial multiplexing
■ Diversity coding

Precoding is a function that takes advantage of multiple antennas and the multipath issue that was discussed in Chapter 3, “WLAN RF Principles.” 802.11n uses transmit beamforming (TxBF), which is a technique that is used when more than one transmit antenna exists where the signal is coordinated and sent from each antenna so that the signal at the receiver is dramatically improved, even if it is far from the sender. This technique is something that you would use when the receiver has only a single antenna and is not moving. If the receiver is moving, then the reflection characteristics change, and the beamforming can no longer be coordinated. This coordination is called channel state information (CSI).
Spatial multiplexing takes a signal, splits it into several lower rate streams, and then sends each one out of different antennas. Each one of the lower rate streams are sent on the same frequency. The number of streams is limited to the lowest number of antennas on either the transmitter or the receiver. If an AP has four antennas and a client has two, you are
limited to two.


Just remember any speed you see advertised is actually the connection rate, and not the throughput rate.

cool, just picked one of those up! I get like 28 on cat5 and like 11 tops via wifi, if i can get 22 via new router i will be happy. what kind of card is in your laptop?

Motorola SB6121 modem & Netgear WNDR4000 Router w/ Cat6 Cable.

Felt like things were slower so I swapped out my router and modem, much better now.
