The very first time I took my 4rnr off road, I ended up on the side of an incline. The truck shook a bit and ofcourse, the positive side of the battery touched the side of the truck ( I never noticed it was reversed ) and smoke bellowed out from under the hood. I pulled the pos side of the battery of the fender and unbelievably, the truck started right up and I drove it home... I looked around a little, but I just can't see what I cooked??... I did not see any melted insulation?.. But some thing melted for sure, there was a bunch of smoke... When I am driving down the road and then turn on the lights, the truck cuts out for 1/4 second... I have been driving the truck every day and other than the fraction of a second cut out when an initial electrical drain is applied... there are not significant issues to report, everything works... Can you guys lend your advice as to what may cause the momentary cut out?... Thanks!!..

Okay, here's my guess. When the POS battery terminal (or cable end) touched the sheetmetal, it created a direct path of current flow through your ground cable. Keep in mind that the main ground cable is connected to the chassis. So even though you haven't noticed it, the ground cable insulation is probably what burned and smoked under your hood. Trace back your ground cable and look for evidence of burned insulation somewhere along the way.

If you were to take a wire and touch the POS terminal on one end and the NEG on the other, you'll burn the insulation off the wire just about instantly. The only exception is if you have a very large gauge wire that can handle all of the battery's current flow.

And check the battery its self for melting and check the alternator. it could damage that sense the truck was running when it grounded. The drain could be the battery, i would replace that. i grounded one once with a wrench and it blow a hole in the side about 2 weeks later. the whole time in between the car had bad power drains.
 
Thanks you guys.. I glanced at the main ground right away, the insulation was still on it. I'm wondering if the voltage regulator would cause/rectumfire would cause the the electrical cut out like that??... There is no drain on the battery, the truck fires right up as usual.... Hmmmm???....
 
Okay, did you check other ground cables?

BTW, you should really install your battery hold-down to ensure something like that cannot happen again.
 
..lol.. The rectumfire is from my old moto days..lol.. Is there a rectifire in these altinators or are they aux on these or what??... Yes, it only cuts out the (ingnition??) electrical system for a fraction of a second when I hit the brights or touch the rear window switch... I corrected the battery issue with a new hold down, rubber insulation and turning the pos to the inside... Thanks for any more advice you guys, I will look it over again.... put a voltage meter on it... Thanks for any sggestions....

I believe the rectifier for the charging system is in the engine bay mounted by the coil, the part with the big heat sink. I'm basing this entirely off the fact that I don't know, but a lawn tractor I had as a kid had a rectifier that looked just like that. :naughty:
