I was wondering if any of you know good cat-back exhausts for 1st gen 4runners. I have been looking and all I find is the dynomax kit which looks good, but says it doesn't include the intermediate pipe. I'm not sure if they are talking about the pipe from the header to the cat, or the pipe from the cat to the muffler, but if anyone has this kit, please let me know which pipes it comes with and how well you like it. The pictures they show have the pipe from the cat to the muffler which is what I want, but the comment they all have make me uneasy. I actually tried to buy it once already from autopartswarehouse.com but they didn't have it in stock. To make a long story short, if you know anything about this kit or about any others please post it. Thanks

re exhaust

Just rolled up to meineke on my 95 sr5 v6 4wd i dropped something like 340 with no tip, for flowmasters and 3 inch.

I told the guy i wanted 2.5 inch, and he tried to sell me the delta series muffler, witch was around 115 "the most agressive muffler flowmaster sells"

Anyway I ended up getting the "suv" muffler that has 3 in' in and out, it was around 215, i have (for now) stock headers, and stock cat, dude said the cat was in tip top and it would be good for another 130k, i did however land a flat in the parking lot on my way out of the shop :(

Anyway anyone out there on stock pipes on the 3.0 knows there's a pretty distinctive "growl" at around 2k, the 'suv" muffler greatly amplifies that, but it's still not a 8 liter :P.

They sound nice, noticably louder than stock, for me they kick in at around 2.1k, and again at around 3k. They also make the idle (800 rpm) sound pretty agressive.

It's a "50 series suv preformance 3 chamber"

Even after i elaborately explaighned to the guy that "this thing aint really got no horsepower" he still urged me to go for the 50 series. This thing was ment for 300 hp+ applications, anyway it sounds pretty nice, a little mellow, way better than stock, sounds way less constricted, and it appears to have just enoughf backpressure, no poping valves, ectra. It really sounds "opened up" compaired to stock. The 50 series is made to be "quiet on the inside" I've actually turned a few heads with this muffler, i like it, it feels more responcive.

FYI I HAVE STOCK cat and headers, i think that if i were to get a high flow cat and aftermarket headers, and if i ran 3 inch all the way, i would most likely need to use a inverse cone or other similar methods to keep the proper amount of backpressure.
YOU MUST have ADEQUITE backpressure or you WILL loose Horsepower, that is one of the main reasons i went for the 3 chamber.

Anyway in the end, would i recommend this set up? Yes.
But there's most likely a better sounding soloution out there, for cat back, however it most likely involves 2.5 inch, and the muffler brand begins with a F.

I too think you'd be better off going to a local muffler shop and getting a custom catback installed. The made to order systems you will get from the internet are just too expensive for no reason.

I have friends that have gotten complete custom exhaust systems installed for $150.

Ted over at www.engnbldr.com who is very highly regarded in the 22RE community recommends the following:

But now we need to think about the exhaust system. Improving the exhaust system is number one as far as freeing up usuable power, it doesn't "make" any at all. But the factory needed a quiet, smooth, and responsive engine because the driver might be a little old lady going to the store in Hawaii, or a young fellow driving around at 5000 ft altitude in Colorado. So they compensated for this, and for ground clearence on some vehicles.

The best setup cost wise we have found is to use the excellent factory exhaust manifold, then increase the pipe size to 2" all the way to the muffler, yep, the cat, too. Then we increase again to 2 1/4" on exit all the way back.

This creates a bit of directional flow and frees up power, it fairly quiet and smooth.

I personally think I'm going to do my own with pipe and mufflers from the auto parts stores. I think I can do it with about $30 in pipe and another $50-100 for the muffler depending on which I go with. I'll probably just run straight 2 1/4 from the downpipe to the muffler ditching the cat and then just 90 it over to the side of the truck with 2 1/2" and do an exit before the tire. Or possibly just downturned right from the muffler. I'll have to play around with it to see what's possible.

Thanks for the input. I think i'll just get a custom one. I have heard that the 2.25" is the optimum diameter for the 22re without turbos also. I agree that engnbldr is great because I bought my engine rebuild kit and torkr cam from him. Seems like the guy is very nice and knows a lot about the 22re. Thanks for the input and i'll look for those mufflers.
