Any keyless entry SYSTEM experts? unusual question

Anyone know how the keyless entry works on a 4th gen? Is there a remote keyless entry module (RKE), is it built into a body control module or something else?

I'm wanting to add keyless entry into my car I'm restoring and while this doesn't have a regular trunk release button, it does have the longest range of any car I've owned. I can operate it from 500 feet or more easily. If it's possible to separate one from the vehicle I'd look for one at a junkyard to swap in. I've looked into late 90s GM standalone RKE modules, but there are many reports of some getting a range of less than ten feet, that's no good.

Its integrated into the body module.

Where is the keyless remote id stored, the BCM or RKEM? From looking at the FSM and the signals it would be stored in the keyless entry receiver as it looks like codes sent to the BCM are not unique.

Can I take the keyless receiver and BCM to a new car and somehow get it to work? If the remote ID is stored in the receiver I could program it in my truck then switch it.

Are you talking about a 4th Gen? Because the wiring diagrams show that the BCM controls the keyless entry functions. There's a receiver unit (basically the antennae) but no separate keyless entry module.

Yes, 4th gen. I realize the RKE module and the BCM work together to lock/unlock doors. What I want to do in essence is take a keyless receiver and a BCM and connect them together in another car.

It looks to me like the when you program the vehicle for a remote the remote "ID" is stored in the keyless receiver and not the BCM. Because in the FSM page 1389 they show a square wave for various features such as unlocking doors. It appears the signal sent to the BCM is a certain square wave regardless of what vehicle/remote is used. It appears to me that because of this the identity of the remote would be stored in the keyless receiver. The receiver has four wires, a power, ground send and receive data.

Also, if one had the pinout of the BCM it may not be hard to simulate key in ignition, door opening and closing etc to program remotes. It should also not be that difficult to have the BCM lock/unlock doors, etc.

First problem is I don't know if this really is how it works. What data would be sent to the receiver if it were not programming or a check against programming? I'd like to use lock, unlock and use the rear window button for a trunk release.
 
I seriously have no idea why you are so bound and determined to re-engineer the Toyota body ECU for your other vehicle. Not only would you need the ECU, but possibly add to your list the door locks, as they have built in switches to communicate back to the ECU to let it know that it's actually locked or unlocked, and the Door Control Receiver (the antenna that BlackWorksInc mentioned). Definitely not worth the hassle.

If I were in your shoes, I would get an aftermarket keyless entry system (yes, they actually have those!), or an aftermarket alarm system. If it's the distance you are concerned about, many of the newer alarms have two-way communication, which can reach up to a mile. Some add-ons include window control, Remote start, GPS tracking with internet access, pagers, range extenders (if you still feel it’s necessary), many, many, different types of sensors, trunk release solenoid, & if you don’t already have them, REGULAR door lock motors (they’re pretty inexpensive).

And now would be the time to install the unit(s) you need as you may already have the vehicle disassembled. In my opinion, the aftermarket route would be your best bet. Also, you have to think about if you have any malfunctions later on – will it be easier and CHEAPER to troubleshoot and replace the ECU, or an alarm unit? Definitely the aftermarket unit.<O

I think you're right. Newer cars have things way to integrated. My backup plan is a BCM from a late 90s f-body car. Good features, no canbus, no other modules required and simple to connect and only a couple bucks at the junk yard.

BUT......... WHY?????????? Even if you go with an older BCM, it's still for a different vehicle, and you still basically have to reinvent the wheel. :doh:

I don't understand your resistance to using aftermarket parts. You do realize most electronic OEM parts are manufactured by companies deeply embedded in the aftermarket scene as well....
