Any news on a 5th gen V8?

I currently own a 2005 V8 Sport Edition and was browsing and planning my next Runner purchase next year. I was sad to see that there is no V8 as I LOVE my V8 and wasn't necessarily impressed with the old V6's. Any buzz about them coming out with a V8 version? I know when the new Runners came out they offered a 4 cylinder but that appears to be gone now so I was hoping they would offer a V8. All their competition seems to offer a V8 but they don't.

No news on it. A midcycle refresh wouldn't be due until MY13, so that is the soonest we could speculate getting the 4.6L UR.

No news from Toyota but Jeep just announced in the Aug Ed. of "FOURWHEELER" magazine they are coming out with the "SRT8 Grand Cherokee" for 2012. It's going to have the 6.4L Hemi V8 with 465hp and 465ft/lbs of torque.0-60 in 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 155mph and still have a 450 mile range.

Maybe Toyota will come out with a special edition to compete. They don't leak many secrets over there in the land of the rising sun though so we'll have to wait.

I would be shocked if Toyota ever offers a V8 in the 5th gen...

Well these are not the 'old v6's' under the hood of the 5th gen! There is a lot of buzz about a v8 5th, sadly it is mainly on the forum and not on a dealership lot though. Take a new one for a spin, you might be happy with the new engine, or not.
 
I may be mistaken but isn't the reason that Toyota went with the V6 since it put out more power then the intial V8 that was planned? Is that the same motor used in the 4th gen? Just asking..
 
V8 wont ever happen. You'll see direct injection and turbo before a V8 and thats from toyota themselves.
 
Even if they don't offer a V8, they should still offer some other engine besides the V6. I'm leaning on a diesel as well. The Tundra also needs a diesel.
 
I think Toyota not offering a V8 has to do with the new government average fuel economy standards. Therefore, they couldn't offer one even if customers would buy it.

I don't think the 4Runner sells in enough numbers to really impact CAFE. The GX460 manages 20mpg highway with a V8 and 6AT.

I think we could see a "performance" hybrid 4Runner like the Lexus models. In the Lexus models, they typically slightly improve the highway fuel economy, give a decent bump to the city number, and give a nice improvement to performance. They hybrid drivetrain is clearly stout enough.

Eh, I'm waiting patiently for a mid cycle refresh for a couple of things - hopefully they happen. I have a '10 black SR5, but I would trade it in a heartbeat for a Blizzard Pearl Trail with a v8. All the rest would be nice to haves and not *really* necessary. While I do like my SR5, I want a bit more power, so the v8 is really on my list, but a diesel would be VERY interesting....

Nice to haves:
Auto closing back gate (as with 4th gen)
Antenna in the glass
Less sucky temp controls.

I'm contemplating a Limited for some of the creature features I want... but I think I prefer the look of the trail (and the KDSS). Yet, I prefer the color blizzard pearl. Why can't I get what I want? lol

The diesel conversion is 22k... Not sure that really qualifies as economically viable. Better off purchasing something with a diesel already.
