anybody know what this vent is for???

it has a black box thing behind it that only opens on the top. it has patches of insulation all around it and has a vent thing under it with a tube over it like for over flow of somthing... i have no clue what it is for and was thinking about putting a speaker or sub behind the vent. there would be enough room if nothing back there is too important.

I dont know the technical term but its a relief damper to release positive air pressure like when you close a door or have heat/air going. I think the tube is a drain from the sunroof and the insulation cuts down the road noise in the cabin. I would leave it personally. I scoured craigs for a long while to find a jl stealth sub that worked with my setup.

It is your vehicle vent. It flows the the fresah air from the dashboard and exits the vehicle at that point. The tube that goes to it is a drain from the sunroof. The insulation is a sound deadener. It keeps the noise down from the outside vent.

If you get rid of it, you won't be able to get any fresh air from out side.

yah, mine went out a couple years ago too. it was like 200$ to replace that little bugger though... so i just kinda ran some wires around so that it worked just as well without the box. i dont remember how i did it but it works just as fine. but when i said the black box i ment the big one that is like bolted to the side panel with the insulation/sound deadoning stuff on it.

It probably would not be a good idea to mount a speaker there. More then likely , your talking about a subwoofer and most of the time they need an enclosure of some type to be the most efficient. Plus, If you mount an speaker there, the vent will vibrate and rattle making all kinds of unwanted noise. Get you an enclosure of some type and mount the sub in it. It will be tuned, you will be able to get clear bass notes down to the sub 50hz. If space is something you want, I think Q-logic makes a box the installs over the right rear wheel well.

yah space is somthing i would like. and also if it could be hidden it would be a big plus. ill look into that Q-logic box. thanks for the input.

as everyone said its the postive pressure vent and the hose is for the sun roof. there is also one on the other side.

if your looking to put in a speaker, i put one on the other side. I have a 02 with the big storage compartment.

yaaahhhh, thats exactly like what im looking for. i have that same compartment too. i dont think it would be too hard to do. how much did u spend on that whole setup and installation?

well i did the whole thing myself. as for cost, it was just the MDF board + sub so <$60 total. it was a pain in the butt to do. i spent a VERY long time on this to get the volume right to fit in that spot. i didnt take any pics so i dont have anything else to post other then be prepared to get very frustrated haha.

oh well, this is just exactly the type of thing ive been looking around this site for. for some reason i cant find a thing about it. nice work, and as soon as i can convince my parents to let me do it ill be attempting this myself. i have all the time in the world to be doin stuff like this. thanks for the idea and info.

JL Audio actually makes the Stealthbox for the 4runner.
Kinda pricey but well worth it. I have one in my Accord and love it.

yah ive seen those. they are rediciously priced i think.. id rather just make one myself for the extra storage in the right wall. it would be a nice task to keep me buisy ya know. 600 bucks is just insane for a custom box, a 10 inch sub and an amp. id rather just make my own n have some fun with it. for around 100 or so for a halfway decent setup. and then i can say that i did it all myself. im a diy kinda guy

ridiculous indeed. i scoured craigslist across the whole country for a couple months. Believe it or not i found one in Cali for $90. sounded way to good to be true. Im in Oregon, Spoke to the guy in socal and he was pretty short, too bothered to answer questions. I paid a friend of a friend $100 to drive about an hour to meet him, inspect it, buy it and ship it to me.

Ended up costing me $200 total. Truth be told it really doesnt utilize that much of the cargo area, while rendering it completely useless but i tell you what, it sounds phenomenal.

Twitchee yours looks great. by getting the volume right, do you mean the acoustics/correct pressure with all that space back there? (Im assuming you removed the cargo storage piece?)

thats the nice thing about the jl is its all sealed up and ready to go. i looked at the q-logic and it just didnt seem to have the quality i was looking for.

here is a pic of my setup and why i had to go that route. you can barely make out the sub but you can see the cargo box which is why i needed to go that route.

I did a similar thing. Mounted the sub in the stooge box. Fiberglassed the inside to make it strong.

Yup mine has a .25ft^3 sealed box back there. Its a 6in 200W sub and the manufacturer (elemental designs) recomended .25ft^3, its small but for what it is, it hits hard. it was exactly what i was looking for.

youve got a nice setup there. if i didnt know about that hidden sub box there i wouldnve never know it was there. matches perfectly. and thanks, it might take me while to get to the project but its deffinatly something i want to do. ill let you all know when i get to it.

i got this about a month ago n hooked it up on my own, i used a line output converter so i could keep radio stock. its a great addition to my seystem without loosing annny cargo space! EXAAACLTY what i wanted it fits perfeclty under my drivers seat. so i can even feel the bass in my seat haha.. but ill put up some more pics if anybody wants more. just ask if u want more pics or have any questions about install!
