Anybody running 285's?

Anybody currently running 285/75/R16s under their 3rd generation Runner?

If so, I would like to hear your thoughts and experiences with the bigger tires. I've heard going to 33 inch tires may lead to decreased mileage, increased breaking distance, decreased acceleration, increased ride stiffness, etc. But, how much and could you live with it?

What was it like to drive on them when you first switched from 265/70/R16s?

What about owners of 1st, 2nd, or 4th generation owners? What are your thoughts on the matter?

Any response appreciated.

Thanks Folks.

P.S. I know a lift is required to run 285s w/o rubbing.

Since you have the 3" lift, you'll be able to get some 285's under there w/o any problems. I think you might encounter some rubbing on good ol plastic stuff.

You will experience the decreased mpg, acceleration. Also your speedo will be off too.

But I think it's well worth it if you offroad as it gives you a bigger footprint (ofcourse after you deflate the tire).

Good luck!

what would that be in inches 285 = 32's????
Had 15's on the old rig so things were very simple 31's, 33's...
Now I have 17's (stock bling bling) and I think stock is 29 ish I think?

285 would equal approximately a 33 inch tire. I just put the new tires on yesterday. I'll give a report on their performance after giving them a chance to perform.

As usual, thanks for the replies guys.

I have a 285/75-R16 on my factory 2002 sport edition for at least 15k miles. My gas mileage went down a little and the power I could not compare since i got it about the same time I got the s/c.I'm pretty sure it takes a little bit of power away but it's worth the clearance you get ,not to mention it really looks good.

Street Report on the New Tires

Well, I've had the new super-sized Revos on for about a week now with 300 miles of driving on surface streets and highways.

The ups: These tires are quiet and very smooth, despite the aggressive design. My ride improved dramatically over the the stock Goodyear Wrangler RT/S tires I replaced. I could not be happier with the ride quality so far.

The downs: Not the tire's fault, but I've got rubbing issues. Most noticeable while making sharp turns (u-turns, etc.). I haven't noticed any rubbing due to articulation yet but haven't been off road yet either, just driveway ramps and stuff. I plan to determine where exactly the rubbing occurs and address it if possible. There's a little loss in acceleration and a little gain in braking distance which was expected and is not a big deal (for me).

I'll report with the off-road results in the near future.

Have the Yokohama Geolandar LT285/75R16s.

Downside is there is reduced acceleration.
Read about needing to regear to 4.56 or 4.88.

Advantage is in highway driving wherein
engine rpm is lower compared to when I was still using P265/75R16s.
