The .308/7.62x51mm is a good round.
I'm actually looking for a DMR/Battle Rifle setup in that cartridge museums, but I am looking for a gas piston system. If you're okay with DI, there's a good number of AR10 and SR25 derived platforms out there for a good price. They are are all a bit more expensive than their AR15 cousins (this end of the market isn't as standardised as the AR15, so interchangeability can become an issue, i.e. magazines)
Couple manufacturers that come to mind ate DPMS, Armalite, LaRue, ect.

my DSA FN FAL fills that bill nicely.

I just recently started looking at FALs, originally I was looking at a LWRC REPR; but the new ones dropped the Adverse and Closed positions on the adjustable gas dial (I know they said they were having issues with it, but honestly from what I read it had to do with carbon fouling and them sticking...) Not to mention the weapon is easily in the $2500+ range (not that it's not a quality product, it's just a good chunk of change is all and I want to set money aside for the 4Runner and a new computer so it's stretching things a bit.) I also was looking at SCAR-H's as well (particularly since you can get a magnesium lower that will take P-Mags and there's a healthy aftermarket for them so they don't look like an ugly boot,) another option was an HK MR762A1 (again, propriety magazines, high cost, and a bit limited on aftermarket.) I've been a bit iffy on the other gas piston offerings based on reviews and forum chatter, i.e. SIG's 716 and Ruger SR-762
The FN FALs look nice and DSA seems to do a good job with them, they are definitely a more affordable option though. I was actually hoping to do the whole parts kit and legal receiver route; but after pricing it out I might as well spend the $1200-ish for a built DSA. I kinda wanted a "beater" to get a feel for the weapon before I dove too deep but it seems like even "used" or parts kit guns are pretty pricey now (gone are the days of a $200 receiver and $250 parts kit I guess?)

I built a few AR 308's including my own.
DPMS pattern has more options regarding parts vs Armalite pattern.
Keep in mind some lowers will require the same manufacturer's upper. The most important advice I can give you though is if you are going to build, make sure you headspace your bolt to your barrel.

If it is your first, make sure you use the proper tools (borrow or invest in your own). I'm sure someone local can provide additional guidance. Suggest checking out the 8541 Tactical channel - Mega Arms Maten Build Series

I purchased all my parts online except my receiver set (benefits of having Rainier Arms and Mega Arms locally). Although having Larue so close, i'd be tempted to pick up the 7.62 PredatOBR.
FYI - Rainier Arms is having a summer event this Sat where all online orders are 10% off if you missed the Labor day sales.

they aren't quite $2500, so yes "more affordable" but, mine was a lot more than $1200.
with a handful of spare mags, and a couple upgrades, I was at $2600.
though, I do think they have some for cheaper. I opted for a PARA.
That would be a plus but I'm a Shipley's kinda guy HAHA.
I may have to sneak off to LaRue in the next few weeks and talk to them. Wife won't be to thrilled about that. Oh well. Maybe I'll hide the cost of the gun in the cost of the surround sound system I'm building currently.

I saw some of DSA's "modern" FAL builds around $1200~1500 for the weapon itself, so I consider that affordable when a similar FN SCAR-H, HK MR762A1, and/or LWRC REPR are touching the $3500 for just the weapon and no scope.
But yes, with scope and other goodies that price does jump quickly... currently my ideal build is sitting around $4500~5000 depending on the acquisition price of the base weapon, scope, and some accessories.
Why the hell did I decided I needed off-roading, guns, and computer gaming as hobbies? Thank god I don't have a GF/Wife at the moment or I'd be living in the 4Runner!

Unless things have changed since I bought my LaRue, I'd call first and see if they even accept visitors. They were not really a store front place in the past and pretty much discouraged visitors. They are great to deal with on the phone and build an exceptionally fine rifle albeit expensive. I have not done business with them in a couple of years so things may have changed regarding the storefront but I would definitely call before making a trip.

yep, it adds up.
after a few months of buying mine, I added an EOTech xps2, and magnifier...
that puts my retail price around the $3500 mark.
jesus...maybe I shouldn't have stopped to add it up. I cant believe I spent that much on a single gun....
